Opinions on the 3.6 V6 Engine ( 260 BHP ).........please

Featured Replies

Is it a Good engine,  bomb proof,  cambelt or chain,  any known faults

Your opinions please,

Assuming you are talking petrol..

With a few quid the VR6 is easily tuneable to a massive amount of power. Very well engineered with crank journal oil jets and an auxiliary water pump to circulate coolant when the engine is switched off to prevent hot spots, lots of metal in the head too so head gasket failure is very un common.

Timing Chains, usually good for a long time but the tensioners can wear or fail causing a rattle. Older engines had a recall for chains as the manufacturer had stamped there name into the chain too deep causing a weak spot.

They go well, lazy but strong and use lots of fuel when pushed hard, sound good though.

here is a good view of things......

Hi Auric,

Hope you are well.

I worked for a force that had 3 unmarked Superbs with the 3.6 V6 engines and 1 marked. The 3 unmarked have recently been sold off all with mileages around the 140,000 mark. No real issues at all with the engines themselves although 1 did develop a nasty chain rattle at over 130 something thousand...

Couple of issues with DSG and accident damage in tactical "situations" but great cars loved by all.

So all in all I'd say they were good lumps.

Cheers

I haven't heard of any issues with them, in either the Passat R36, Superb or VW CC
