What to look out for in a Mk II

Featured Replies

My Mk i is now nearly 7 years old and has 200,000+ miles on the clock.so the time has come to look for her replacement.

I do around 30,000 miles p.a. mixed urban and motorway. I've more or less decided upon a 2.0 l CR 170 but maybe a CR 140. (similar to my existing  PD 140)

Level of trim, colour etc. will depend on what's about, but there seem to be plenty of 3 - 4 y.o. ones around for £8,000 to £10,000 in various specs and mileages.

My question is the usual one, although the search function doesn't come up with an answer -  are there any specific things to look out for in the Mk II's ?

I've a '12 170 DSG Elegance estate, and I don't believe you could buy anything better - certainly for the money. I to do 30K per year, mostly motorway, and the car is like its name - Superb. I always get out after my 200 mile commute as fresh as I got in. My car now has 35K on the clock, no major faults (had the Columbus unit replaced as the radio turned off a couple of times, then it locked in start-up mode prompting replacement), and dealer service excellent.

Had a set of tyres - the original Continentals were rubbish, tread left but sidewalls split, and prone to bad noise on some surfaces - at 20K, the new Pirelli PS3's look good for 30K and are better in all respects.

Fuel consumption 45 mpg all day long (brim to brim, so real numbers). I would say the 170 is better than the 140, that little bit of extra oomph helps now and again.

No rattles, no problems, no oil consumption, hoping for 150K + without a hitch!

Thanks very much for the response.

As far as I could see there didn't appear to be any general problems with the Mk II, unlike the Mk I's (water ingress, oil pump problems, seized suspension parts) all of the problems reported seem to be one offs, or infrequent.

Your post has confirmed what I had hoped.

TBH I left the posting a bit late.

The Mk I kicked over 200,000 miles last week when we were away for a long weekend, which sort of "panicked" SWMBO into seriously agreeing that she needed replacement. She can't drive but loved the Superb so much, that she was pretty insistent that we got another, newer model one.

No work today, last night she suggested going to look at a couple................... guess what's coming!!!!

This afternoon I've bought a Superb Mk II, 2.0 Tdi CR (170) in White with a partial upgrade interior pack (1/2 leather seats and SatNav), rear glass shading.

60,500 miles.

Reduced down from £10,995 to £9,995, with £1500 P/X on the Mk I

(Apparently the Hatchbacks aren't as popular as Estates secondhand. They had 4 other similar spec and mileage estates for £1000 - £2000 more and no negotiating room)

Interestingly despite being 4 years newer and a more powerful engine the new one ends up about £90 a year cheaper to insure.

Roll on next Monday.

Glad you got sorted. You won't be disappointed. Try cruising on the motorwy at 70 mph and put your foot down - only for a few seconds. Always makes me smile, but the wife does say I'm a big kid !!

I know that feeling well.

Before the Superb I had a Mk I Octavia vRS, which did exactly the same with a similar result and response from SWMBO.

Unfortunately I also picked up 9 points in 3 1/2 years of ownership.

SWMBO fancied an Estate in Amethyst (mauve - yuck) but it was a 140 not a 170 so I persuaded onto this one.

She was still going on about not having a "boy racer" car, with a too powerful engine.

"No Dear" I kept saying "it's the same size engine as our existing Superb - look, it says  2.0 litres, and it's a diesel, not a petrol"

I didn't dare tell her that it's almost the same power output as the old vRS.

So hopefully a few years of similar enjoyment without the penalties. After all, it's a Superb and I am much older and more mature now.
