glove box falls open

Featured Replies

Has anybody had an issue with the glove box door falling open ? Mine takes several attempts to shut now. It looks like the button maybe doesn't return fully when pressed. It's just starting to drive me mad now.

Yep, mine does that!

As you say, the push button doesn't always return fully and needs a little tug to help it along. I sprayed a little GT85 on the sliding bit and it works okay for a while but not a permanent cure :|

Yes, I had that.  Took it in and they ordered a new catch and fitted it under warranty.  Upon collecting the car found that it wasn't opening correctly and you had to press on one side of the button to get it to open.....took it back and they adjusted it and it's been OK since.

Same here on my last Yeti, and like andyspan, cured it with a squirt of WD40 - was OK thereafter.

I've replaced quite a few. One thing to note is that the latch is easily damaged. If you are pushing against something in the glovebox to get it closed, it won't last long :(

I'll try some GT85 later then. Hopefully that will cure it. I don't want things to start falling off or anything now it's getting on a bit. I want to keep it in good order incase I can trade up later this year.

I did try a spot of spray lube...but it had no effect whatsoever.  I suspected at the time that there might ber a spring inside it and it had lost it's will to ...spring....

The new one had a much improved action but "caught" as you pushed it in hence them having to adjust the release mechanism.

They had the car in for a day in the first instance (loan car etc etc) but adjusted it while I waited on the second occasion.

Hi,

Mine too also had the same problem and was repaired 2 weeks ago under warranty as the car is not even 12 months old.

Regards,

Mike

Same here. The button/catch stayed in, so pressed it in and out a few times and seems ok. Will give it a spray when I remember.

Hahaha, I've just fixed this issue with my YETI this afternoon and now I find this post.

I screwed open the glove box and sprayed some oil on the mechanical parts, now it works again.

The wheel in the middle was crucial in my case.

To open the glove box there are 3 screws, one is behind the button to open the box.  The top of this button can be removed by pulling it to the right.

Good luck.

After so many years I came across the same problem with my daughter's YETI. So I decided to fix it as I realized that all these advices about using lubricants simply did not work.

Finally I found that the problem is a small gear which rotates around a plastic stud . The gear is too tight around the stud thus preventing the sliders to move freely. Hence the locking in place of the door is not complete and falls back after hitting a bump on the street.

I thing the video I tried to make is self explanatory:

If only more Youtube car repair videos were like that instead of starting with "HI GUYS!" and wittering on for 15 minutes before showing anything, 1 minute 20 seconds was perfect, that would have been 20 minutes plus with most of the other narcissists.

No annoying and overpowering music either.

I too have this problem and would like to fix it. The video is good but what does it mean to "open up a little the opening of the gear"?  Does anyone know how i go about doing that?

Thanks

Thanks to everyone on this thread for the tips, especially in the video about the third screw hidden behind the button.

I didn't want to dismantle the mechanism too much - I knew I'd lose the spring somewhere so what I did was to clean up the moving parts, squirt of brake cleaner followed by a little WD40.

I then took the spring out of a biro, shortened it a bit and added it to the spring at the front right* thus giving a bit more force and BINGO! It might not last if the biro spring stretches but at least I know what to do.

  • Mine is a left hand drive model so could be the opposite side on a RHD.

Thanks - 4 years later this helped me. I just tried the spraying to no effect so drilled out the inside of the cog (7 or 7.5mm I think) and now it’s perfect.
