Safe Tuning Mods for a Yeti tdi ?

Featured Replies

Hi

Been looking at what is available tuning wise for my 2010 110hp 2.0TDI 4x4 , come to the conclusion that the removal and reprogramming of the protected ECU could be a warranty problem as the car has 12mths on it and dont want issues if anything goes wrong.

So the questions is what more natural ways are there and what have people had good success with

Higher Octane Fuel

K&N / Piper Air Filter

that sort of thing

Worth doing ?

Air Ride  IIRC NickP has all you need for sale. :)

Personally I think any very low level mods to get past a waranty with be hardly noticible other than the placeebo effect.

I'd wait 12 months and tune the pants off it! :D

Or just say "to hell with it" now.

I tuned mine with 4,000 miles on it at two months old...  never looked back.

Better fuel and/or higher flow air filters will have negligible effect on an otherwise standard 110.

Personally, I'd just get it remapped...

If you're concerned about dealers noticing, then get something like the Shark STS or Revo SPS - these devices allow you to switch the car between standard and tuned maps at will.

110 -> 140, a plug in box by Race Tech or Race Chip(google it, German outfit) cost about £130 great improvement in running, more gusto, economy etc and the benefit its demountable quickly, just 2 plugs and sockets  -  although I believe the later noes have a connection into another feed at the base of the lump.

JST at Home(?) may have a box available as in another thread indicated he was changing to a 'burb'

If you are thinking of increasing the power of the 110 then remember that you will have to improve the front brakes in particular.

Don't worry about improved brakes - just hit em, that'll stop you ok!

All joking apart, thought of an upgrade but not a simple change of caliper carrier so it stayed as was, have never found probs with the original setup although,i live in rural Brittany and rarely encounter stop dead situations - but when reqd the car will stop on the proverbial sixpence - cf stopping is a function of brain thinking speed, together with vehicle weight and speed at the time of the incident!

I am no expert and only just started researching this but am i not right in saying the plug in chips boxes etc are a waste of time as the ECU is protected and needs to be removed for the remap ? also read a few reports of less than knowledgeable companies ending up with yetis refusing to start after chipping.

Regarding the brakes am i right in beleiving the 110 and 140 have identical brakes if so then an upgrade to 140-145bhp is surely not going to be an issue ?

I am considering doing the remap at a garage, as always its knowing who has the right knowledge for the job, i live in Teesside if anyone has any recommends round near me ?

Also when looking at specs etc my car is a 60 plate but was first registered on the logbook jan 2011 so which version should i be looking at ?

thanks

Andy

^^ no  was a recent response by TP as I recall with a parts list, not cheap.

My Yeti is a 60 plate, with the plug in box a marked improvement(traffic lights GP etc) in performance, and not had any problems with the box. Its probably well on the way to paying for itself from the improved economy point of view.

Car reg Sept/Oct 10 fitted box June '11 now covered around 43k in the car

A remap is better on the 170 (Not a huge amount have a subjective view of both on the same car, I do).

But you are right OP, the ECU does have to come out.

So if you don't want it to show, be removable and "hide" the modification a tuning box is a better bet.

It's a decent mod and I'd recommend it if you don't want to mark the car as "tuned".

Like everything, there are positives and negatives to every choice. :)

Thanks for the offer might just do that should be up that way next week how long does it take to fit then

Andy

The common rail only option is a 5 minute fit, the common rail plus option is 5+ minutes and a bit if swearing thrown in too
