anybody done a diy seat re-trim before?

Featured Replies

As above, I figure using the original seat material as a template for the new stuff? Im only going to change the grey water stained material, at least thats the plan!

Any advice greatly appreciated

I've seen someone do it before using a black leather look vinyl.

Didn't look great tbh

Sounds like a tricky job. What skills have you got? ie machineist, upholsterer etc. I think you can get the seat covers from Skoda. If it's got a part number, they can get it. Or, as another member has done, remove the covers and put them in the washing machine. Or, hire a rug doctor or similar.

Well I am crap but my mother is fairly good at sewing machine stuff and she has agreed to do it if its not going to be a waste of money and if I find out how tricky its gonna be! Obviously if its really hard I wont bother

Will have to be really good or it will look crap TBH.

With so many standard interiors about, why try and reinvent the wheel.

On that note I can sell you a set of perfectly intact seat covers (mk1) for cheap if you are interested, not vRS though and look a bit dirty on strong light/flash so could use a run through the washing machine.

non vRS seat covers won't fit onto vRS front seat bases though :(

I find the seats really comfortable, I have sat in my mates polo gti ones and they dont feel as good! I haven't seen any others I like, not to say they aren't out there

Oh.....I have  ......despite being second hand and no doubt a bit older than own seats were, my refurbished Recaro leathers feel BETTER than my 2006 vRS seats were.

Makes you wonder what Recaros would have been like brand spanking new, they would have been awesome but haven't worn that badly...it no magic or secret that they are one of the best car seat manufacturers.

In fairness the vRS seats are quite nice and supportive.....just these are even more so *plus lumbar support*. So trust me, there are definitely better feeling seats than the standard fabia ones out there, not just Recaros there will be loads of options. Not sure about the Alfas but they certainly look the part.

isn't it mattvrestate with the Alfa seats in his?

Ahh just noticed they're for mk2

Use a vax or similar to clean the whole seats.

Once dry apply scotchguard or similar fabric/upholstery stain preventer.

Clean seats to stay.

If you REALLY wanted to go down that route. Also done by a well known company so would save the headache of trying to stitch your own.

Ahh beat me too it.  If you read the description though they will do mk1 seat covers for you to put on yourself.  So you can either have them put on for you or order some and do your own.  There's a couple of guys on here with SS retries and they look the absolute BOOBS!!!!!!!!!!

What recaro seats have you got mate

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Why not dye them?

If you're taking the covers off and only using the grey bits as tempaltes anyways you could always try bunging the whole lot in the washing machine with a pack of black Dylon first.

might not work but would save your poor mum working on them if it is successful

Black and yellow leather ones from a mk3 colour edition Golf GTI

I looked into it because the driver seat base isnt great on mine quite a pain in my right arse cheek after a long drive with the plastic shaper uncovered.

To put a new cover on you need bullrings and obviously the bullring tool aswell.

covers come from round the bottom quite easy but then they are held on to top of seat via two metal poles set into the foam and clipped on with bull rings.

Normal pliers and then cable ties do the trick.

The bull rings and tool are about twenty quid I think which isnt that bad! Shes alrite with it, give her a couple of quid haha
