alex lawrie skoda not honouring warrenty on parts!

Featured Replies

A heads up for people like me who thought buying more pricey genuine shock absorbers from the dealer meant you would be covered by there warrenty...well they are not. I purchased 2 front absorbers 18 months ago. Front left failed on the mot due to leaking fluid. Skoda insisted they would need to see the vehicle which was fair. 30 mins after inspecting I was told they wouldn't be replacing the part cos they are allowed to leak and enough fluid was in the shock to not cause a mot failure. At the time they did sew some doubt at the mot testers competence...suffice to say the testers stood by there work and rightly so cos the moment I drove away all my front end knocking noises were cured.

I have raised a complaint with skoda and it is ongoing...I feel it is dangerous for dealers to go against lawful mot and not stick to the warranty. If I somehow convinced the mot man the shock was good I would of been driving around in a dangerous car

As far as I know any OEM part fitted by the dealer which you have paid for are  covered by 2 years warranty / Labour costs

Try another dealer

OEM parts fitted by the dealer under warranty that you have NOT paid for are only covered by the warranty of the car. so if your parts, which you did not pay for are fitted a week before the warranty expires there cover for ONE week only

I think

They are supposed to warranty parts they sell to the public for 2 years regardless who fits them too hence my complaint. More on principle now over monetary value

Thats correct, if you paid for them they should be covered.

But it sounds like they were not fitted by the dealer, " Still Covered ? "

Playing Devil's Advocate, problem here is that they are wear and tear parts. If fitted to a new car they would only be covered for 6 months or 6500 miles, whichever is soonest. The relevant section of the Skoda New Vehicle Warranty is below. But if the parts have failed because of a manufacturing defect then I would be arguing that they should be replaced.

Items where the lifetime of the component is or can be influenced by driving style and external factors will only be considered under the terms of the warranty for a period of six months or 6,500 miles (whichever is soonest).

Beyond that limit, the defects must be classified as wear and tear and will not be covered by the SŠKODA warranty.

Components subject to wear and tear are as follows:

• Brake linings and disc pads

• Clutch release bearings

• Clutch pressure plates and centre plates

• Tyres

• Wiper blades (wiper rubbers have no warranty owing to their conditions of use)

• Seat and backrest covers

• Floor coverings

• Spark plugs

• Batteries for key fobs and alarms

• Light bulbs

• Shock absorbers

The section of your post I've quoted also applies to replacement parts and can be found in the genuine replacement parts T's & C's.

Do you think that if they were fitted by the Dealer, I don't really know if they were /were not , may have a bearing on the out come

Hi guys..they were fitted by a separate garage however when the dealer sells u parts they know this and where specific in stating they still have a 2 year warranty

It shouldn't matter who fitted them as long as they were fitted correctly and any cause of failure of the old ones was rectified before fitting.

These are wear and tear items and don't have a 2 year warranty. The warranty is also not unlimited to six months/6500 miles. Exclusions still apply. You can't expect any warranty if the failure is caused by another component or you are using the car off-road or on a track.

I wont argue that they are wear and tear..but that is how they sold them with warranty and when I tried to claim they were aware of the age and mileage etc and stil insisted on seeing the car so no stone wall etc

That's interesting because something similar happened to me. When my Octy was at a tyre fitters I noticed a front strut weeping around the base at the bottom of the spring. I ordered 2 from my dealer to be fitted as I believe they should be done in pairs. On the day of fitment at my Skoda dealer the service manager came out and said why did I want to replace them so I told him because of the oil I found coming out of it. He showed me a few pictures issued from VAG about what was aloud leakage wise on them and tbh looked worse than mine but I said do them anyway. He did tell me that a certain leakage is allowed on them and wouldn't fail an MOT.

Misting is 'OK' and would probably get you an advisory at an MOT. Leaking is a different matter.

Stormchaser, yeah they showed me the same documents with pics which made me a bit peeved with the mot tester...but since they wouldn't budge, at the time I begrudgingly paid for them to do the work intending to make a complaint at the council. I drove the car away and what I thought was bush knocking noises was infact the shock cos boom...all knocks and noises cured...so the spool coming from the dealers is imo dangerously wrong

Yes I thought the dealers information to be wrong so I got them to replace them regardless. My O/S/F was wet with oil and I was a few months away from MOT and didn't want to chance it.
