Tyre rotation for 4x4

Featured Replies

Good morning all!

Being a nice day outside, I thought I would put my new front mudflaps on. As I need to take the front wheels off anyway, I might as well rotate the front and rear tyres. They have done 11000 miles from new. But then I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Haldex system is sensitive to tyre rotation. What should I do? Any advice would be most welcome.

You are recalling from way back when it referred to the earliest, far more fragile systems were in place. The later haldex systems have no issue with tyre rotation and uneven wear. :)

You are probably aware, but most tyres are now directional so you can only swap front for rear on the same side.

I wonder if resetting the tyre pressure sensors on the infotainment system after the swap will also reset the speed differential baseline for the Haldex clutch to take into account of the slightly different diameters. Logic tells me it should! If it does, then perhaps I am worrying about nothing : )

I have the Torsen system on my SQ5, but from what I have read over the years the same rules apply to haldex as well, although as mentioned above, the latest gen AWD VAG systems aren't as sensitive as they used to be.

I rotate with the aim of keeping the tyre wear as even as poss and change all 4 at the same time. In my case 8k miles was 65% front worn/40% rear. So I swapped at that point so they should all be down to 2mm at the same sort of time.

Definitely reset the TPMS after the rotate (I forgot and it went off in a mile or so) - but this won't affect the diff settings.

Yeah, definitely reset the TPM but I don't think it has a bearing on the Haldex.

On our 4x4 yeti I change summer to winter tyres and back every year and haven't had any problems.

They have a bigger difference in rolling circumference, I guess, than your swap so don't worry.

Yeah, but you're changing all four tyres, so that wouldn't ever be a problem anyway.  What the system is designed to detect is uny unnatural difference in rotational speed between one wheel and the others.

With my Scout the difference of rate of wear on the tyres was very small, so I rotate them when I put the winter wheels/tyres on. I've also read that Haldex IV (for facelift MkII) is insensitive to wear, and I guess Haldex V is similar or better.

Thank you all for your input. Have a nice day!

True about the TPM but I was referring to Haldex.

Never mind. :)
