Cambelt change

Featured Replies

Hi All

Got on 08 1.4 tdi roomster that has not had a belt change yet

Is this an easy job or is it best to book in to a garage. The last belt I did was on an old 8v 88/89 Fiat Uno so not sure about this beast.

Thanks

Glenn

There are threads in the Fabia section about when to change ,and on Youtube there is a video regarding the VW polo tdi(which may be the same engine as yours?) cam belt change.I have a 1.9TDI and would baulk at doing it myself, although one brave forum member posted his 1.9TDI cam belt change as a guide to others in one post. Hopfully access with the smaller engine is better?

In my opinion it was so much easier to change cam-belts on older cars, just 3 pulleys, and you were done!

And I think its the one time a mechanic actually earns his money!

It is practically the same job as my 1.9 guide in the Roomster Technical Guides section but with loads of room as only 3 cylinders, only 1 camshaft. So the bit where everybody has trouble removing the engine mount on the end of the 1.9 block will be a breeze for you. If your methodical and fine with spanners and a socket set nothing complicated.

I trust you know it is standard practice to change the water pump at the same time.

Thanks all

I take it that means I don't need any locking tools etc?

I'm pretty sure the process is identical to the 1.9TDI engine, so yes you need the same tools. Even these pictures show tools T10050 and 3359, that's exactly the same tools. In fact these pictures do look exactly the same as my 1.9 engine, that is why I think it is the same process but with better access since you have a narrower 3 cylinder engine.
