Never to old to learn part 12

This reply does not compute...  Error 404...  How can lights (that make you safe and visible to others) EVER come on too early?!?!

I thought that was what the DRLs were for - when I see approaching Yetis their DRLs always seem plenty bright enough to me. I questioned the sensitivity because on Auto mine do seem to switch the dip beams on and off unnecessarily sometimes - for example when I travel through the Hindhead or Southwick Tunnels on come the lights but the tunnels are themselves very well illuminated and the traffic around me is clearly visible and I've not noticed other drivers suddenly feeling a need to switch on their lights.

Your  post implies the more light the car is producing the safer and more visible you are. That might be true for the individual driver but whether its net benefit for road users as a whole I think might be doubtful. The current trend for more and brighter LEDs (and in pretty patterns) as DRLs seems to be becoming counter-productive, in my opinion crossing the line from an aid to visibility to a distraction to other drivers and that can't be good for pedestrians and cyclists who effectively become less visible.

And thanks to Wardy for his advice, I'll try a bit of deep cleaning and see if that improves matters.

In your opinion.

I did say "in my opinion" (three lines from the bottom) but with 35 years working as a professional engineer in highways and transport including at various times managing road safety and sustainable transport teams for local authorities I think I can argue that it's not a completely uninformed one. We'll just have to agree to differ.

Meanwhile returning to the subject, I tried the central locking switch and it does open & close the windows. There is a brief mention of this in the owners manual but of course we're not meant to read it.  :D

I noticed that my Xenons didn't automatically turn on when unlocking my car this evening, could this be a protective mechanism for a dying battery?

I could not get it to close the windows on mine Rick, Can you try and explain how it works for the less technical amongst us :giggle:

I can see your point and where you're coming from.  But the Auto lights are far cleverer than you think at first glance.  For instance in bright sunshine when you are driving away from the sun your headlights will switch on so that cars coming towards you can see you better as you are hidden in the sun's glare. Just having the DRLs on in this instance won't suffice.  Also the headlights come on when your wipers are on regardless of the light conditions.  Similarly they will come on if you drive at over 82 or 85 mph (I can't remember exact speed) for longer than a few minutes...  All these features you will lose if you switch them off from Auto.  In 32,000 miles with my Yeti I think I have only had to switch the lights on twice myself and in both those instances it was foggy.

+1

with reference to tunnels-I think there is an underlying mis-perception at work. The fact that paul52 can see well enough and can see other traffic is not why the yeti switches its lights on is not to improve his vision or for those around him who are as observant and visually acute as he is. It is to improve the chances of others noticing him. On a journey down through france and innto Portugal (many tunnels) the signage indicates that headlights are required. I think they are right and the Yeti agrees!

Just tried the lock button trick, all windows open, sunroof tilts sun blind opens, press lock and they all close, another nice trick thanks

and the folding mirrors!

No the mirrors didn't fold using Johanns central locking button trick.

They do on mine...

It's all about the magic. I just pressed the lock side of the button to close the windows, Though when doing any of this my mirrors did nowt,

The mirrors will fold in and out when using the FOB buttons. but if the mirrors don't respond with the FOB buttons then the windows may need resetting.

OK will try again tomorrow

Not a lot of car-jacking and handbag-snatching on Skye, though

might have something to do with saying "Open wide, now" all day long!!

It took me a while RickT, but eventually I managed to discover the magic  :giggle:

Well today I played with this lock button. I got into the car and did not put the key in the ignition. Pressing unlock longer than two seconds dropped all the windows and opened the sunroof on tilt. Pressing the lock button did the opposite and also started to close the blind for as long as you kept pressing the button. Peculiarly none of the sunroof buttons work at all until you put the key in the ignition and turn it. I tried to open the blind again with the button there and no can do until you turn the key.

I can also confirm that all this works exactly the same way with the car on the move. Quick way to get trapped warm air out of a parked car for sure. Or to silence someone jabbering in the passenger seat.
