What is it?

The full product details can be found here at the Blaupunkt UK website, but to summarise, it is a single DIN radio+CD headunit with turn by turn voice navigation.

Where did you get it from?

I bought mine from the nice folks at Blue Spot for the princely sum of

Here's a small update for those that consider buying one. And I'm affraid it is not good news (well, for me it is).

So what's up then?

All the documentation (product literature, etc) states that the DXR52 can take 2 auxiliary input adapters. I had already found out the hard way that one of these types does not actually fit on the headunit itself, but now I've had confirmation from Blaupunkt UK (and they in turn from blaupunkt Germany) that the other adapter is not usable either. The reason for this being that there is no menu option on the headunit to enable the input from anything other than a CD changer. Probably decided as a cost-saving decision, but very weird none-the-less as all Blaupunkt units have an AUX-IN function.

And what does that mean?

Don't buy this headunit unless you can make do with either a CD changer (and these baby's are more expensive than other brands like Sony, etc), or just the CD in the headunit itself (replacing the navigation CD).

You bought the wrong one then?

Yes and no. Yes, I had planned to use an mStation mp3 player instead of a CD changer, but obviously this isn't possible without an AUX-IN function. No, I still like the navigation part of it and it will just mean that the mStation will be replaced by a CD changer instead.

And yet another update. Whilst driving back home on Sunday evening all of a sudden the woman tells me I am approaching a roundabout... on the M4! I don't know if it is a bug in the planner, or that the GPS location was misinterpreted, but it did surprise me a bit. Should also say that I didn't have this on the same road the day before going in the opposite direction.

How boring am I? No need to answer that :D

The unit held itself together quite well, until I started fiddling with my mp3 player again. I don't know what I did, but I managed to break a tiny little wire inside the GPS connector, which means I now have a

I have a Clarion Sat Nav system & from time to time I have the same issue (the system loses sight of the Sats.) Usually corrects itself within 500 metres or so. The longest ever was for about 5 miles, but the system reverted to gyro & speed sensors which is not as accurate for guidance.

Apparently they "All" do it from time to time. The manufacturers have a very nice "Get Out Clause" in the small print saying the Sats belong to the US Gov. & as such they cannot be held resp. etc etc.

Quinten,

Brilliant info, cheers. This sounds like the perfect solution to my wife regularly doing things like going the wrong way down the M6 or arriving in Leeds not Nottingham from Sheffield etc. I'm a little confused though. Does the nav CD 'load' info into the h/u or do you have to keep the CD in while using the sat nav ie can't listen to music CD's and know where you're going at the same time? Also, are you saying that the GPS aerial makes use of the existing car aerial or is it an additional exterior fitting?

Sorry if these questions sound a bit dumb but I have no experience of sat-nav.

I believe if you want to keep the mapping 'active', then the CD needs to remain in. Could be wrong.

I've seen a nice 5-slot CD changer though which will fit into the DIN-sized slot beneath and that's my current line of thought re. getting satnav.

Yes and no. When you are planning a route it needs the navigation CD. Once the route has been calculated you can remove it and insert an audio CD. However, if you happen to deviate from the route it will no longer be able to give you a current position and will display your location as 'off road'. You can then re-insert the navigation CD and it will automagically find your location again and re-calculate the route. A better solution would be to buy the CD changer (which I just ordered this weekend) and use that to listen to audio CD's whilst keeping the navigation CD in the HU permanently.

Also, are you saying that the GPS aerial makes use of the existing car aerial or is it an additional exterior fitting?

The GPS aerial is a separate aerial, which connects to the back of the unit. It is a very thin wire with a small black box at the end which you mount in your windscreen (as it needs line of sight with the satellites). I have mine next to the A pillar on the passenger side, just underneath the Tax disc and Tesco Toddler parking permit :). That way it is not easily visible from the outside (theft prevention), but it still maintains line of sight).

The 5-slot CD changer is very nice, but if you have it visible underneath the HU, it might attract more dubious types... hence my choice for the 10-slot boot CD-changer.

Ta.

Could this be fitted BELOW the symphony head unit in the useless gap that I use for my chewing gum?! Therefore I can keep the original stereo & multichanger etc....?

You probably can get away with it (space wise), but the tricky part is going to be the wiring. Also, the blaupunkt is slightly protuding (sp?) out of the slot, unlike the symphony which is flat, so it might look horrible. I just ditched the whole symphony unit and got the blaupunkt changer as well.
