Dashcams

I've got KitKat on this device, with Google Now whether that means you could potentially just tell it what you want to open or do ! I don't know the full ramifications of this and whether they would allow you to add commands in the long term, but its exciting for such a cheapo device that could lead to very simple interaction, no fiddling.

Its also got face detection so unlocking it on is as simple as looking at it lol

I understand also it can be triggered into car mode somehow although yet to work out the best dash mount to do this. With quick USB connection charging on such a mount would be perfect if there is such a mount.

I'd also be looking at this to give me satnav and not bother going for dual din with satnav now I think.

Now if you could get it on car mode to AUTOMATICALLY start the app (or if there is such an app that would detect car mode and start itself) combined with a decent enough cradle answers all the critic points above and would make a fantastic app equivalent of dock (+more!)

  • Bit of an inconvenience in my opinion. The thought of hooking my phone up to the mount every time in the car sounds horrendous.   Love my dash cam as it cost so little, it instantly records as soon

  • I have something similar to that for my phone. Might give a few apps a try and see what sort of results I get. Cheers

  • My suction is solid and never falls off. Only a few quid on the bay too.

Well I've done a few more things on this topic Firstly I've installed the car mode application on my phone - its really great, makes it the same kind of basic display on a satnav / radio and suchlike. But you have to install it off APK because for some reason Google removed it from the lastest flavours.

it has all the options you'd want with basic buttons for opening satnav (even shortcuts to home or work), as well as music, voice search, contacts, phone, or anything else you think you need to add as custom buttons (like dashcam)

I've also installed a free dashcam app, which seems to work quite well and has full settings for storage recycling etc.

As I plumbed for the 16Gb model memory isn't something I'm short of.

Lastly, I had an old satnav dock with windscreen sucker.

I love to reuse stuff where possible, so I examined it and my new hard protective case

(which has a quite useful removeable screen stand - so you can watch HD stuff on the mini display, like at work, or on holiday, travelling etc), it had those minitiature rods that are used to pivot from like on watchstraps.

Amazingly the size of that didn't seem that far out from the plastic mount but some more bodgery was needed before it would be anywhere close to fitting.

That is what I've done and now should have a usable screen mount, I can just use the click tabs on the satnav mount and its held fairly securely in place - for free ! I've also got my standard car stereo side mobile mount but that can just remain empty for now whilst I just experiment how useful it is having it screen mounted for testing dashcam software.

So I should be able to get some tests of how useful the app dash stuff is tomorrow.

How did you get on?

My cheapy dashcam arrived today, so I'll probably try it over the weekend with the 12v adapter before wiring it in properly. All the packaging and instructions are in Russian, but it seem pretty easy to set up. Hopefully the Russian influence won't mean it will be recording crazy **** like this very often.

181168320228 is the item number on eBay buddy

There's a great review of it on YouTube just search the product name and it's like, 32mins long and the guy sounds like the guy from art attack haha

Hi, have you got a pic of how you attached this unit to your interior mirror, thanks in anticipation.

I got the suction mount with my order mate, well had to order it but it was only £3 or so. Spot on quality and hasn't fallen off or anything yet.

Sorry guys. Great phone this moto G.

Its actually very good results as a dashcam, despite being about the first app I came to, and there is a mix of free and paid, so can support stuff like keeping vids automatically on shock etc (but to be honest I've got 16gb and yet to run out anyway)

I've tested on a fairly capable but simple/effective one just called "Dashcam"

When you consider the "mount" is actually a used (free) cheap satnav mount, original nav unit went in the bin but kept the mount and I've botched the rubber mount to exactly fit my moto G's...so the release clasps match perfectly on the space where on my mobile case has a removable stand.

Leaves a tiny bit to be desires, a very small light shake from it on rough roads (as I'm slightly lowered and on 17s profile tyres of course this it part of it also).

I've got some vids on the phone but really can't be arsed with the whole uploading thing! But the quality IS good.

They are like 300Mb videos. The quality of the vids is A1 for recording whats going on (thanks to the quality of the phone cam, not meant to be amazing if you read the reviews, but still very good results as a dashcam ).

Also having it "at hand" can make revisiting the overtake you did quite fun, not something it sounds you would be liable to do so often I think if it wasn't centered around your phone.

Since I'm using "LLAMA" (location aware mobile app) it can actually fire everything you want automatically as soon as it realises you aren't at home (car mode on, turn on car home, turn on gps etc.

The only issue I have is whether I ROOT the phone because I don't really like leaving spying location services on all the time ! You need this in order to get llama to use the Secure settings plugin to be able to access more lower level areas.

But thats about my only limitation with it and I could just leave the services on.

It would be more than adequate if you were involved in an incident and needed comeback from it, the only limitation being no rear coverage but surely the same applies to other dashcams ?

I've been meaning to get one myself, they are a good idea. The standard of driving on our roads is shocking, especially in rush hour. It wouldn’t surprise me if they start having front/rear cameras as standard on new cars soon. Sure you’ll get people complaining about invasion of privacy but generally those who complain are usually the ones who drive like tits lol.

Would certainly help with speeding up insurance claims, proving who was at fault and preventing fraud. Can't argue with video footage but witness statements can be inaccurate!

Well, the cheapo one I got was OK, but the mount that came with it was too large to fit behind the rear view mirror, so I gave it to by better half's brother to pop in his Superb and he seems to be getting on with it fine.

I've just ordered one of those Mobius cameras to replace it.

I hid the wires in the rood lining and along the A-pillar. You can only really see the wire coming out of the back of the camera and that's because I just have a standard cable not one of those 90 degree ones like what sat navs have. Can get a pic for you tomorrow if you want? But it's awesome, and it comes with loads of features that you program on the computer or your android device. Also the size of the phone would annoy me in the windscreen, does the screen light up once it's started?

Dann2707... if you do have a pic of your installation that you can share, that'll be a big help!

Ancient thread redirection. Posted on tech part but hey us fabia guys have even less of a life so I know it will get seen here.

Basically,After an incident last week I'm looking at getting a dash cam. Have seen the blackvue Dr350, any experiance with these people?

Impressed with the price 119, but what do people recon to it?

http://www.blackvuehd.co.uk/BlackVue_DR350.php

Also thinking of getting a cheap one for the rear, what's people's recommend for a cheapy cheap one?

Dan, should you see this, how are you getting on with the mobius, searched eBay an can still can buy it, although the set up example pic seemed a huge set up. Got a pic of yours?

I don't have the 350, but have a 380 and a 500. In general terms the Blackvues are reliable and discreet. In my experience providing you reformat the sd card every month or so they are very reliable, which ultimately is what you need if the purpose is 'just in case' you have an accident and want to use the evidence. The downside is that some of the competitors such as the mobus provide better video quality allowing things like number plates to be read more easily/ from further away. The Bullet style suits some cars better than others too. As an example it sits very nicely in front of my rear view mirror, but in Dr Z's mk3 the mirror mount is different so it doesn't fit in the same place.

In our experience the 380 and 400 are far more reliable than the 300 and 350.

The 300 and 350 seem to suffer from recording errors sooner if you don't keep reformatting the SD card.

If I was buying a Blackvue, I'd get a 380 as I can't see how the more expensive models are worth it.

The Mobius gets good reviews, if you can find somewhere to buy one.

I'm personally moving from the Blackvue to the RoadHawk now due to bulk costings, but I can't discuss that as I'm not a forum sponsor and don't sell them on here.

They are for my own fleet use.

Had any formatting issues with them? I did every other week :(

With the Roadhawk?

No.

Mind you the roads out here set most cameras off a lot!

You can turn the event recording off so it doesn't fill the SD card up.

I was using my smph as a dash cam also. The problem is that none of the apps are working fine (or according to my requirements). A dash cam app should stay in the background first of all, because I don't know how you're doing, but I'm playing music from my phone, so having easy access to the player is a must. Secondly, a 10minute clip shouldn't take more than 70mb, which in my case, with all the encoding, was going to about 200mb. Third, but not the last, is the video quality. Multiple apps running at the same time were causing the video to be recorded sluggish (at about 5 or 10 seconds there some frames dropped for some reasons - I'm using a class 10 micro sd card so transfer rate shouldn't be a problem).

All in all, I'm looking forward for the next gen GoPro Hero, entry level, not the black edition, which is looking amazing and it should do a hell of a job and it is cheap, compared with the others.

Does that mean you might be getting rid of some Blackvue ones then Boss  :p

Sorry, but I already have.

Toxic had the last two 300/350s.

I'm keeping the 380s until they die of old age and replacing with roadhawks.

Ahh pity, ah well worth a try :)

The trouble with GoPros is that they, as far as I can see, do not do loop recording or record when plugged in, two very important things for dashcams.

As for Blackvues, I'm likely binning mine after it died a battery death. I have a Mobius with the capacitor kit now.

Ahh pity, ah well worth a try :)

:finger::happy:

I've just ordered one of these...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/E-PRANCE-Recorder-G-sensor-Megapixel-Detection/dp/B00FKTQ3NE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1391724100&sr=8-2&keywords=novatek

I'm not expecting much, but I expect it will tide me over until such a time comes that I can afford a better one. I intend to hard-wire it into the car, and fabricate a permanent mount for the windscreen, behind the rear view mirror if it's any good.

I'll check back to share experiences/post some footage when I've received it and had chance to try it out if it's any help.

It'd be handy if folks who've also bought cheap dashcams could share which ones they have, and how good/bad they are. I've tried a couple of the Android apps, and wasn't overly impressed. There'd be glitches everytime any other app did anything, or if I received a notification etc. The footage wasn't great either, especially in the dark. That could've been down to my older HTP phone though.

I have one of these dash cams and they are brilliant bought along with a 32gb card from Amazon only about £35

How long have you had yours? going for £27 now which is stupidly cheap. not trying to decide between this one and the 0803, both have similar reviews

I gave mine away in the end. the mount that came with it was too big, which made it difficult to mount in my windscreen. I gave it to a family member who has a superb, and he's very happy with it.

I went for  aMobius in the end, and I've been very happy with the footage from it. Seems very reliable too
