40K Mile service. Hmmm

Featured Replies

So, my 2012 Vrs CR estate has covered 40k miles in 21 months and this is its 4th service and the first one I have to pay for.

Payed £289 and for that I got

Oil

Oil filter

Pollen filter

and

thats it!!!!!!!

I inquired about other items that may need changing and was given a print out showing what and when (Vrs CR)

Diesel fuel filter 6 years or 60k (£50.90)

Air filter 6 years or 60k (£29.11)

Timing belt 95k or 4 years (£514) plus water pump (£649.99)

Brake fluid every 24 months (£58.48)

As a comparison I took my wife@s 2003 Shogun to Mitsubishi last week and had the following

100K service

oil

oil filter

air filter

Fuel filter

Pollen filter

Coolant change

Cam chain top guide changed

Valve clearance

That cost £350 and feels like much better value for money.

Depends on what value you place on the FMDSH stamp.

This can repay itself at selling time or any goodwill from Skoda if your car has a problem outside the warranty.

I agree the cost in itself is not good value, but looking a bit further ahead......

Try haggling / ringing around other dealers, the prices vary a lot :)

£80 for a diesel fuel filter & a air filter...........thats ridiculous....you could by them for a third of that price & fit them yourself in 30  mins max. That price for the cambelt & water pump seems expensive too,im sure skoda dealers have a national fixed price for that.I bet they didnt even take your car wheels off too.

The dealer has taken the p*** I'm afraid.

It's always better to check on here first.

You could have had oil, oil filter and pollen filter for £129 inc. VAT from any Skoda main dealer...

The other prices you quote are also inflated...

I'd be getting back on the phone to them on Monday and playing holy hell.

40k service fixed price is £249 so he did not over pay that much

That's a major service. The items he's listed is a minor service @ £129.

The only difference betwen a minor service (£129) and a major service (£249) is an air filter and a fuel filter (diesel) or spark plugs (petrol).

I never pay for a major service. An air filter is £15, a fuel filter (the OP's car is a diesel) is also around £15.

Both are easy DIY's but a main dealer should charge approx. 30 minutes labour for them both (£50).

Get a minor service done and ask them to do the other two filters as an add-on (£80).

That's a major service for £210.

As the OP has said it's his fourth service (and first one he's paid for) then I assume his car has been on Skoda's free service package. Therefore he only needs a minor service.

Skoda's fixed price for a cambelt & water pump is £449........your dealer wants £200 more...........time to find another dealer as this one is robbing you.......they want £13 more for the brake fluid change......cheeky feckers!  :wall:

That's why I do my own servicing. I was told the spark plugs would be extra on mine as they aren't due till 60k. Bought genuine oil filter and then all other parts from euro (air filter, castrol edge oil, spark plugs and pollen filter). Cost me under £100. Don't think paying another couple hundred pounds just to have the book stamped is worth it personally. My car is three years old and I keep all reciepts for work done with mileage noted on it.

Did not realise it was on skoda UK site. Very helpful for if they try to rip you off. Thanks. Is this the case for variable services too?

Yeah, the variable service is the 'major' service.

However I urge you to study the differences between the fixed (minor) and variable (major) services. There is very little in it, certainly not £120's worth of extras.

A lot of dealers try and claim that the more expensive variable or major service is far more comprehensive. The reality is - it isn't.

If you take your car in for a cheaper fixed/minor service then I can assure you all of the visual checks they claim to do on the major service are still carried out. It is in their interests to find something wrong with the car and try for an upsell.

I'm on variable but I get the minor / fixed service done for £129 and change the air and fuel filter myself.

It was a major service and when you look at the major Vs minor there is no difference. Items such as the pollen filter, fuel filter and air filter are only replaced if required and you pay extra on top.

My problem is that my nearest dealer in Canterbury serviced my previous petrol Vrs for its first service and they were so bad I would not go back.

The dealer who did this service was Beadles Maidstone and although service is good they have become more expensive since they moved into the old Audi showrooms.

The only indy I know of is Youngs in Wrotham and that is even further away from me.

I am now thinking of selling the car and finding something else. Compared to our Shogun the Skoda has become a premium brand when it comes to service costs.

Skoda have confirmed to one member recently that the national pricing only applies to fixed service regimes. It's listed in the terms and conditions at the bottom of the page.

You have been done Stu, they seem to charge a lot for everything down here in Kent, regardless of make.I had a cambelt/water pump change done by a VAG mecahnic for about £325, and my latest service (oil and filters) was only just over £100.Why does anyone use a main dealer now? It doesn't invalidate the warranty if you go elsewhere - I thought the EU regulations had changed that?

Andy- Where was your VW mechanic?

Anyone used Youngs in Wrotham? And what's the deal with the fixed price service at Skoda (£129) - do you have to print a voucher or quote that page to them? I rung Beadles and got quoted £169? Motorline (was Sherlodge) quoted £129... Still awaiting a call back from Beadles from Friday about parts...

Doesn't a 2012 car have a cam chain and not a belt?

The diesels are belt driven.

The dealers won't shout about Skoda's National Pricing, why would they if they can get away with charging £169 instead of £129.

You have to ask for it.

Wow. I thought that was just good manners/common decency/decent long-term business sense! I bought my Yeti from them so kinda pays to keep me sweet as it hits 3 years old, surely? Ok Thanks for that.

I had mine serviced today by an indie. Oil & filter plus fuel filter.......£90 all in. Can't complain with that.

Local to Kent?

Local to Kent?

I used TMC nr canterbury to have my wife's Ibiza serviced when needed. They are a vag specialist and also fitted any parts supplied by myself. Their labour rates are around £50 per hr, so last time I had cambelt and water pump done supplied by me cost just shy of 2 hrs labour.

Maybe worth a trip, but don't expect the facilities a main dealer has.

I also have used them recently for my son's vw polo for bushes and some other stuff.

Saved over £100 but had to travel
