Fault codes

Featured Replies

Hello everybody

I'm new in, and I've looked but i haven't found.

my fabia 1.4 mpi 2001 (60,000miles) has been doing a great job since i got it last year, but I'm struggling with my fault codes now. before xmas my temperature gauge stopped registering, and sure enough the engine management light came on. but it's reading three codes:

16500 for the coolant temperature sensor,

but also 16825 (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16825/P0441/001089)

and 17511 (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17511/P1103/004355)

17511 looks like its the lambda sensor?

It's likely that the precat lambda is sooted up from running too rich with a failed CTS, the other code is the EVAP purge solenoid open circuit warning, this means you have a failed solenoid, it's unplugged or the wiring to it is damaged.

Edit: Taking the car for a good motorway run may well clean up your lambda sensor, difficult in Dorset I know, the A30 is about as close as you can get to a motorway I guess.

thanks guys

funny enough it was on a good long motorway run that the cts failed! would this be causing the engine to run a bit lumpy and explain the reduced mpg? i suppose it still doesn't help if i can't get the cts to work? that's why I'm wondering if it could be something 'upstream'

Yes, replace the CTS, it's about £15 so it'll pay for itself in fuel savings really quickly, you won't get it to work, just replace it.

What's 'upstream' from the precat lambda apart from the spark plugs!

Disconnect the battery, drain the coolant, replace the CTS, refill, reconnect, take it for a good run.

You'll have to investigate the EVAP solenoid yourself, check it's plugged in properly, check it's not open circuit using a multimeter, check for 12v at one terminal and ground at the other when you first start the engine.

thanks sepulchrave

what's missing from my first post cos i clearly cannot use a computer properly, is that i have already replaced the cts, but to no avail... i was just putting it down to the fact that its a 2001 and the wiring's probably gone

if that is the case then i guess I'm stuck with a fuel inefficient car (that i bought for its efficiency!) oops

or a hefty bill ;)
