How can I remove the caliper spline bolt as it rounded off under torque wrench undoing

Featured Replies

I tried to remove the rear caliper carriers on my vrs. I had a large torque wrench with a slight extension on to reach m14 spline bolt. Trouble is when I used full force it shredded the spline bolt.

I see that Irwin do some removers for this. Anyone used them with success pls,or know any other way. I used wd40 before trying but it's an absolute ****

Or am I better taking to a dealer to replace the bolt as I see snap on do similar removers. I have new spline bolts. Grrrrr

You may need to heat them then spray with wd40. Might need to do it a few times to break the bond.

Stud extractor or Stilson type grips, the kind that bite harder the more you apply torque.

Would it stand a little bit of weld to hold a bit of steel bar? Then use that to help ease it out. Maybe too brutal?

Before doing any of the above, take a heavy hammer and a drift and give it some beans with the hammer, don't tickle it, do it like you are trying to kill it, often this shock is enough to 'crack the seal' so to speak, and then you will probably find it will undo with the spline tool. I'm just simply amazed at how many people's advice is to break out the welder or mash it up with some mole grips on this site.

Ahh come on Tom, you know breaking out a welder is always fun, even if it's not needed ;)

Saying that, a bigger hammer also fixes many many things.

The welder is a good way of applying heat exactly where you need it.  Much better than a wimpy blowtorch.

An arc will be in the 2000C range, so you only need a couple of seconds to get a bolt red hot.  A blowtorch at around 700C will take ages to do the same.  All the while heat is escaping to do naughty things elsewhere.

Of course there are more delicate ways, but where's the fun in that?

Man this'll be a pig of a job, it's hard enough to get it out when the spline is intact!

Anyway, good luck!

Do you have access to drill the end of the bolt?

You could then use a screw/bolt extractor (easy out).

No I don't have access going in for the clutch problem to be fixed will ask the stealer if they can do it and just put a new bolt in. The discs aren't that bad and had enough of faffing about with the car. Thanks for people's advice

it might be worth ordering the bolts in advance as from experience they are not parts they keep in stock and had to be back ordered and it took several weeks to get them in

I have 4 as I was going to do the discs myself until I ruined the spline bolt grrrr so will give them one. I may try getting the other off as I now have a long breaker bar that will give me force leverage on the other bolt then hopefully can get the broken one off
