Order placed, should I still haggle?

Featured Replies

I placed my order a few weeks ago. At the time I was rushing as the dealership was due to close and I had 10 mins to get from there to my work for a nightshift. I did some haggling, got a reasonable price monthly so I thought. Salesman said most important thing was to get the order place and details could be sorted later.

On review the order they'd added in everything, life shine, service tyres and maint, dent insurance and gap insurance. They'd even added fuel in which don't really wanting added to my pcp! Anyway discount I haggled was all on the extras they'd added. I went back in a week later to add a few more extras and had them remove all extras except service tyres and maint. Now it was clear I was paying list price for the car £29.5k inc options. Just used carwow as recommended by others, already saving over £1k. I have £250 deposit at dealers, is it worth haggling and potentially moving my order?

There's nothing to stop you going back - but you have lost some leverage by ordering and placing a deposit. You have to go into the negotiation with a threat, that you need to be prepared to follow through on, that you will walk away unless you get a better deal.

If you have some evidence that you'll do better, even losing the £250, going elsewhere then that's a start.

I would aim to do it when you have no time pressure because that will only work in the dealers favour. More easily typed than done, I know!

I would be fuming if that happened to me, in fact a Skoda dealer in Manchester tried the same thing I did not buy;

I be telling them to cancel the order or give me the discount I thought I was getting - it might be worth speaking to trading standards.

This experience might cost you £250.

Yeah, I might lose the £250 but would gain a saving of £1030 at another dealer. So would be better off.

Learned my lesson, first time I've bought a car in 5yrs so a bit rusty. Salesman was crap, but I was blinded by convenience of a dealer who was 1/4 mile from my work.

Did they give you an estimated delivery time?

Seeing as most people are waiting 5-6 months, you could go back and say that you didn't realise it would take that long and need a new car sooner and look to cancel. In this scenario they should refund your deposit.

Keep altering your spec on Carwow and the offers keep coming in, Alex Lawrie should be the best, I think you'll find more than a grand of savings out there, I got £1,730 off an elegance, the offers will get better the closer to the end of the quarter you get.

Alex Lawrie have made a real good offer. Have asked my dealer to up their game if the want to keep my order.

Waiting game now.

take the best carwow offer in with you, show it to the dealer & tell him how disappointed you feel, that you feel you did not get a good deal from him.  If he wont match the price, ask to speak to his Manager. Keep going up the food chain.  at least this way you dont lose your £250 deposit.

£1k is not that much of a discount for a £30k car - you should be able to achieve 6% on carwow if you are taking finance, or up to 12% if you are paying cash.

I suggest checking Carfile or Nationwide-cars.co.uk for prices. They are both brokers who negotiate with dealers on your behalf for the best price, and £3000-£4000 discount is certainly possible.

Also, if the dealer has miss-sold anything or added anything you did not specifically agree to you are entitled to a full refund. If they refuse just contact your credit card provider (assuming you paid by credit card) and tell them that you have been miss-sold. They will get your money back easily enough.

My local dealer offered me no discount even after some tough haggling. They are my local dealer but it didn't stop me using carfile and negotiating a 14% discount off the car. I had no problems with the dealer and when costing in price of rail ticket to travel to dealer it was still a no brainer. I would not pay full price for a new car, from what you have said in my opinion it appears you are not being given a good deal and could do a lot better elsewhere.

If you have entered a contract, technically it is not just the deposit at stake but the seller could sue for breach of contract and any associated losses.

Don't see why trading standards would be interested the OP rushed the deal and this is a consequence.

I may sound harsh but I am being factual and I wish the OP a satisfactory resolution.

Of course they will try to screw as much money out of you as possible they are a business not a charity. They are not your friend and not there for the good of your help just to relieve of as much money as the can do so legally.

That's a rubbish deal. I got 20% off list...

At least you have learnt never to be rushed by a sales guy...

Why do people think they can rush a contract through then when they see something better expect it to be changed ?, honestly you should have done research etc before buying and not been in such a rush. If it had gone up what would you have said to the dealer if he wanted to pull out ?.

I went back to the dealer I ordered my vrs with after finding it nearly a thousand pounds cheaper on carwow. They gave me some further discount on the car and also an excellent price on the wheels and tyres I wanted.

Buyer power! That's what!

If I don't like the deal I walk away simples, if as you say dealer was to increase price, I walk away.

Have you seen the wait for Octavias?  It's dealer power!  Main dealers can offer zero discount and still exceed their allocation of cars.

When buying a bottle of milk, you can easily just walk to the fridge and buy it ten minutes before closing but with a car surely you'd apply a little more thought and maybe even complete some research?

Are you saying you actually paid a deposit without seeing a confirmation of exactly what you were ordering and being charged for?

Deposit paid, I saw the order for the exact spec required. Cost was not what I expected, due to all the dealer add ons. When I asked them to be removed they took a long time then produced another order with better monthly payment but extras like gap insurance still in although at better price. They knew I was running late for work, and it was a few weeks before I could go back in. Hence the "let's get your order on and sort out the details later". To be fair I have finally got the extras removed, wasn't easy and they weren't happy and kept trying to push them. Now I just think I could do better.

Dealer power? Octavia is a fine car, but how many are prepared to wait 5 to 6 months?????

In my case it's yes, as I'm in no rush to change and 6 months suits me a better.

Have you ever bought something, perhaps mail order, then sent it back or canceled the order cause it was cheaper else where????

Don't see what the difference is with a car?

I wouldn't worry about getting your deposit back, as they can't confirm delivery date they will have to return your deposit if you choose to cancel. I've just had same discussion with my dealer. They can't confirm delivery date until they get a confirmed manufacture date from Skoda. My dealer has no idea when this will be on my recent order. Suspect 6-8 months with summer factory shut down.

Cheers

Delivery is what worries me most. I need it by end of September, I thought it was plenty of time. But after reading what others are experiencing it may be a bit optimistic. Order beginning of this month. 3 weeks on an zero news from dealer.

Octavias are OK. I certainly wouldn't wait and I didn't but plenty of people will and do.  Of course I've bought something and changed my mind...jeans, shirts, books, socks, insurance policies, food, you name it.  But the difference is probably about 29K.  Except for the mega rich, cars are not impulse buys, no way would I ever pledge to buy something at that price without research.  But, if that works for you then who am I to argue?  As stevehg says, getting your money back should be no problem at this stage.

I sympathise with your dilemma, but I honestly feel you made the deal and signed on it. You would be furious if a dealer did the same thing to you in reverse. eg, " we reviewed your deal and we don't think we are going to hit out monthly profit target, so we have removed the folding wing mirrors from your spec. Don't worry we have left everything else as you ordered, including the price". If you see my point. I think you should take this one on the chin as the dealer probably didn't do anything wrong, you just didn't make the best of choices when you ordered the car.

Sorry :(
