Vrs Tdi - Starting problems?

Featured Replies

Mine does this. 2.0 TDI 150.

Normally first start of the day it quite often take a a good few seconds to catch or falters slightly before it does. It to memory has only failed to start on one occasion whereby the car stopped cranking then automatically cranked again and caught immediately. Once driven it's then usually fine until being left for several hours/overnight.

It's actually never failed me but just strikes me as not being quite right. My car does also have what I consider to be a slightly noisy fuel pump but not sure the issues are related.

  • And that, my friend, is why so many dealerships are so badly thought of and lose trade. Not all dealers are the same - a decent service department wouldn't care less who supplied a car originally .

  • It's only just coming up 4000 miles! Already been back to Skoda once for an annoying rattle and for a low coolant level missed on PDI! The way I feel today Im not sure I would want a 6th Skoda...brand

  • Mine's done 9000 miles, and fires almost instantly, even from cold - sub-zero!

I have been experiencing this issue on and off for three months. I assumed it was poor design of the kessy system jumping the gun before the car is ready. Now I'm intrigued. For me it happens after the car has stood for some time so usually first start in the morning regardless of outside temp.

Yep mine is the same.

Whilst I can understand that something like this is not so easy to get the bottom of because no fault code is set, it shouldn't be too hard to investigate for a good dealership.

Reproducing the problem is perhaps the difficult part.

If my car was exhibiting the same thing, the first thing I would ask the dealer to do is reset the fuel-pump & injector adaptation values.

Modern engines have routines which adapt the control of the fuel pump and injector quantites to give more accurate delivery.

However, if this learning is not working correctly it can cause problems with cold or hot starting because not enough fuel is delivered.

These function constantly adapt while the engine is running so will readapt during normal driving.

Does anyone know who provides the injectors & ECU for the TDI engine?

OK I give up. Called out Skoda assist because the car was slow starting. It has also developed a mis fire on a partial throttle.

No faults found so they said take it to the dealer. Which I did. They hooked it up and said the same. Showed them the videos of the poor starting. Ohh that's not right but........

Nothing they can do as no faults showing on vehicle so drive it till it stops working. Rang Skoda UK to complain and they said if the dealer can't find a problem them there is nothing they can do.

I have the car for three more years and I am just going to drive it. Haven't got time to spend messing with it. If it brakes all well and good then I will send it back to the dealer to be sorted.

Mine does the same, i put it down to the ignition seeming to be electronic (if you know what i mean) that you can stop turning the key all way and the car will start and just presumed it takes a while to make sure the car starts when all the systems are happy its the right time to start the car.

I could be way off but its doesn't bother me too much.

I can't believe the dealer didn't even take the car overnight to experience the issue themselves or take it for a test drive to look for the mis-fire.

The least they could have done is let you park it at the dealership & start the car together with a technician so they can experience the same thing.

Although I can understand your position, as it sounds like the fault is developing more & more and will eventually result in a failure or error code for the dealer, having spent more than 24k  on my car I would be very upset with this kind of customer service.

Thanks. Lost the will to live with Skoda dealers.

  • 1 month later...

Mine has done this a few times and I now video the start, but not done it for a while! Now approaching 14k.
