Tyre recall + New Map ?

Featured Replies

The wifes Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo had its first service few weeks back.

Just found out they changed all 4 tyres FOC as there was an issue with them apprently causing the car to pull left !?

Apparently they also updated the software on the car, wife is now saying its down on MPG. I assume it will have reset all fuel trims ?

Any ideas folks on the tyre / ecu think ?

fuel trims?

Apparently they have fixed a problem you were neither aware of nor wanted doing.

Top Job again Skoda :)

fuel trims?

Yes , when a car had a map it often has its fuel trim set and it adapts itself ( adds or removes fuel ) some run rich , some lean(ish)

I have read in other posts that there has been problems with the tyres on the fabia where it pulls to the left.

I think the tyres in question was dunlop sports what tyres have the dealers put on now and what tyres were on the car?

Was the car pulling to the side before its service and how is it now? As for the software i have heard of this being done to

help the car run smoother and mpg does seem to suffer after this. How was the car running before ? at least you have 4 new tyres foc on the car.

We were aware of the pulling to the left so it was booked in for an alignment , but had all 4 tyres changed ...

I asked my wife about the tyres , she couldnt remember. They were round and thats all that counts ! They are Michelen now IIRC. It has cured the pull to the left.

I agree with the smoothness that you mentioned, but it has destroyed the mpg. She was getting mid to high 40s and now mid ti high 30s.

Bad news on the MPG mate, I have read that this can be down to how the car is driven, counter intuitive but something along the lines of it being more economical with higher revs, driving like a petrol etc.  Unless it is a petrol, then I have nothing to offer.

If your pull to the left is fixed though that is some good news, 4 * michelin tyres is a result.

I would just keep an eye on the mpg i,d give it a couple of weeks say and if it was no better i,d get on to the dealers.

I think you will find the mpg will get better.

I hope the MPG gets better. Its a strange one for sure.

Anyone heard further confirmed reports the Dunlops do this? Will be looking to change all four tyres this year and would happily move away from the factory-fitted ones.

It was not Dunlop Sport Maxx replaced but also Continentals on some cars pulling left where wrongly set up from the factory for the UK.

So Pirelli Zero Nero get fitted.

Disguises the problem well enough, and many owners are now  happy.

Not all are because the Pirelli Zero Nero are not a great tyres, but OK.

Slightly Different Sidewall and side by side, even though still 205/40 R 17, they have a taller sidewall.

Bit of a PITA that now you need to stick with buying Pirelli or other tyres that hide the fault,

because Skoda can not say what was actually wrong.

The cars where set up wrong ? Suspension ? Why would changing the tyres hide the issue ? Mechanically not set up correct .?

My uncles 2013 Monte tsi came with the dunlops and have just sent him a text regarding this thread to ask him if they changed his tyres at his service he's just had.......My 2014 Monte came with Continental tyres from new (cars only done 896miles only 2 weeks old) :)

Had our Monte re-tracked 3 times and the factory Dunlop Sport Maxx replaced by the Pirelli tyres but it still has a slight tendency to go left, although it's miles better than from new; felt like it was trying to turn left not just pull left.

Also run the Monte for about 5 months on 15" 195/55 Uniroyal MS66+ winters and its slight bias to the left remains similar to having the Pirelli fitted. Therefore if we ever wear the Pirelli's out, which is unlikely at 4000 miles a year summer use, then I cannot see an issue switching to another brand, albeit staying clear of Dunlops.

Oh talking to a Skoda Tech from the Doncaster dealers the other day about other matters and we got onto the Monte issue, he tells me that Michelin are what their dealership have been fitting of late to effected cars.

Seboni 121,

So the question is,

what is wrong with some of the International Tyre Company Dunlops Sport Maxx 205/40 R 17 that is having such an effect on

some Monte Carlos & vRS Fabias.

Now that Skoda are accepting it is just the tyres can those that have been fighting with them and wasting so much time and cash to have cars checked again and again, adjustments etc. get their out of pocket paid back.

& Will they apologize and Compensate.

and say openly what was wrong with not only some sets of Dunlops but also Continentals?

Will Skoda dare to say that Dunlop & Continental have been supplying faulty tyres,

or is it how Skoda fit them.

& VW owners in the UK have been having the same pulling to the left with new cars,

& been getting told, 'They all do that'.

Mine has the left pull on the Winter Kumhos 195/50/16s,same as when the normal wheels and Dunlops are fitted. It's quite small and liveable with, but still not right.

I recently had it tracked by a local garage, made no difference, but now the steering wheel is slightly off centre.

Both the Kumhos and the Dunlops are directional and the car is supposed to prefer non directional tyres, but IMO this should not make any difference.

There is something not right about the suspension/ steering geometry, poor design or poor manufacture.I'll go back to the dealer when I've got the time and appetite for an argument.

have you checked the tyre ratings, as the new ratings give an economy and we found on the mk1 fabia vrs the p zero nero were great on road but carp fuel economy

Well reminded!

andybond,

have you checked the tyre pressures since you got the car back, just to see what they set them at.

For me the Pirelli's show what comes out as about 2-3 mpg worse fuel consumption a short period of time but similar trips,

and just right after using Dunlops..

But you would need to be noticing for certain the 20-30 miles less per tank to be sure,

going by brimming not the cars gauge .

Maybe it is not Pirelli they have fitted for you?

Totally agree, why has it taken so long for Skoda to take this action??   :swear:

As dealer all over the UK have been saying “They all do that” and have been trying to fob owners off.  :wall:

If it is that the Dunlop & Continental tyres  have been faulty, why has it taken Skoda so long to sort out.   It’s funny how this is now been done after this issue was covered in Auto Express.

As dealer all over the UK have been saying “They all do that” and have been trying to fob owners off.

To be fair, they probably all do do that... with those tyres on...

Do cars that have been lowered on Eibachs (or other) springs still suffer this problem? Or cars sitting on replacement shocks?  If not, that would give a big clue as to the cause.

They do not all do that with those tyres on, that is really a silly thing to say.

If at least 1/3 of the vRS sold in the UK were on Dunlop Sport Maxx, which they did, and do not all pull left.

& there are over 2,500.

So 1/3 would be 800 plus cars.

Then not all Montes on Dunlops Pull Left, and 1/3rd of all Montes in the UK would be over 1,600

If every car Pulled Left would the tyres that cause that effect have carried on being fitted for over 3 1/2 years now?

(actually,  probably yes knowing Skoda, but anyway, they do not all pull left.)

Mine has the continental's fitted and I haven't experience any pulls to the left, don't know if it makes any difference mines the Monte 105 TDi which feels a lot more solid (heavier) on the road than my uncles Monte 105 petrol his feels skittish, but he's just been in for his 10k service and had no tyres changed his came with the continentals...!!!!

Mine came with Dunlops and had the dreaded left pull.

It's now on a full set of Pirelli PZero Neros after having them replaced under warranty, no more pulling and the ride seems a bit better on these tyres as well.

Mine's not due a service until the end of May so can't comment on the a new map, I know it had a diagnostics check done when it was in having the tyres done and as far as I'm aware nothing was done.

Haven't suffered any loss of MPG with the Pirellis though.
