Iv got one hell of an annoying boot rattle.. sounds like its half closed but its firmly locked down with no movement

only thing i can find is wiper arm wobbly.. does it tighten from inside ?

Broken clips on the inside trim of the boot lid?

Mmmm.. will take a look

might be worth getting a bottle of expanding foam when i re-clip it

and fill the panel with noise reducing material

That might interfere with the rear wiper or boot lock. Its quite a large void.

I had a Fiesta that did the same thing. Looked fimly shut but rattled like hell on the road. It turned out to be the tailgate hinge was well worn. Worth a look as hinge design is no different to that of the old Fiesta.

as trundlenut said be careful using expanding foam.

Its amasing how much it expands. You might be better off buying a cheap duvet and putting that in the void. It will do pretty much the same job but will be removable. The foam wont really without a huge amount of hassle

After I had my rear wiper motor replaced I had a rattle coming from the hatch. The trim, near the boot lock, could be easily pulled away from the metal, unlike before.

The dealer found two clips floating around inside the trim, replaced them on the spot, (no charge as it was obviously their fault) rattle gone.

Off topic a bit. My boot hatch (estate!) shuts/locks fine and is rattle free.. Yet it is not flush. Seems there is a half inch gap at the bottom on the left, and it gently slopes to quarter inch on the right. The bumper is level (I have checked) so I'm stumped. It is noticeable if you look. For it and is annoying me now.

My brother's is similar and mine does it but not as obviously. It's weird because all the panels fit together fine and there's nothing obviously out of line yet, as you also note, the gap between the bottom of he tailgate and the top of the bumper is not uniform.

Sarge.

RESOLVED :

took the trim off to re-fit and tighten up.. to find the rear washer pipe disconnected and tapping against the wiper motor

:-)

filled the boot door with sound proofing foam instead of expanding foam ( advice gratefully accepted ) .. and re-fitted the trim

very happy now

?TY for all ur help guys

Good to hear you got it sorted. Not least because you could have ended up with a wet boot!

Sarge.

yep, made sense seing as i had thought me rear washer was blocked.. looks like it has sprayed all over boot plastic but carpets are dry :-)

Glad your cured it, was going to add, the rubber feet on boot lid can be adjusted. They are threaded so just twist to lengthen. Mine had a horrible loose rattle, adjusted these today and all silent now.

Will review them in the morning, TY

the tail gate gets water in it?

I did this on my old car and it never got wet at all.

Again though, i'd still advise against expanding foam.

  • 3 months later...

I'm on my second octavia. On both are about 3 years, the black plastic trim at the side of the back window started to rattle. Initially identified as just coming "from behind me", I persuaded my sister to sit in the back and listen, pushing anything that sounded as of it might be the problem. By pressing shadier the trim about 2/3 of the way up on the driver side of the boot, the tale stopped. So I put a little wedge of cardboard in there, and for over a month the problem was gone. Now it's back and no amount of wedges will solve it this time.

The trim has a millimeter or so gap between  it and the metal, and perhaps 4 mill between it and the glass.

How do infix this permanently?

At its service,  the technician removed the trim, and replaced it; but also adjusted the hatch's striker plates so it doesn't shut easily. The jury is still out. It rattles on the way home,  but hasn't done so today.
