Trying to be something it's not

Featured Replies

In the last week I've seen a poverty spec 118d covered in more M badges than an M Sport garage, a boggo 1.6 Mitsi Lancer badged amusingly as a 16v turbo gti wrx and tonight a totally standard Octavia Elegance with vrs badges on the boot and both wings.

This is something I've noticed in the past but seems to happen more and more, especially with BMW's and M badges.

Honest question though - what are these people trying to achieve? Any non car person is going to look at that car and see a black car. Any car person is going to look at it and see a 118d with some eBay badges stuck all over it. It either achieves nothing or makes you look like a twerp...

The guy who bought my old octy vrs mk1 (minter) put a porsche 'turbo' badge and one of those crap 'sport' badges on the back! :(

If you put an //M on a non //M car you are a loser

I saw a vectra with a VRS badge on at Christmas

There's a shagged old MkI poverty spec Octy around Eastleigh with a vRS badge on the grille.

Also seen an 90's Escort, red with mahoosive Ford sticker on it. The guy who owns it had a Cavalier 'rally' car before in white with Vauxhall stickers etc, massive wheels, low profile tyres and milk bottle tops for brake discs.

Was that 'Superb vRS' matter ever resolved in the 'For Sale ' thread a few months ago?

I've never quite understood it myself.  Mind you, I'm the kind of person who debadges a car anyway, so I guess I wouldn't.

The thing with the Beemers though is that they have the M Sport editions... hence the 'M' badge. Obviously not relevant if it's a non-M Sport with an eBay badge though!

Not exactly a badge, but my pet hate back in the early 2000's was the sunstrips with the word 'Motorsport' written across them...  Why why WHY!?!!!

On another note, I always used to underbadge my cars. I transplanted a 2.0 16v with headwork, cams etc... into a stripped out Mk1 Clio 16v, and then put standard 1.2 badges on the side. The look on people's faces in the mirror used to be priceless!!

Same here, first thing i do is take badges off and stickers out of windows,

Don't like de-badging, but don't like adding nonsense either.

Removed the Nurburgring sticker pronto off the tailgate of the Fabia when every chav and his mate started buying them off the Bed of Fleas to stick on their grot boxes.

'cus they want you to admire and oggle at them, and think they are a rally driver

I'm hunting for a cheap OE A3 1.4 badge for my car.

Why lie about what you have because when you get found out you will feel like a complete fool and other words to that effect.

Debadging a 3 series is almost as bad, as mostly fine to remove the shame of only having the small engined versions, I don't recall ever seeing debadged 3 litre petrol or diesel variants let alone M series. Let's be honest though a skoda isn't a brand for badge orientated types, the main attraction is that the vrs is a bit of a q car.

My 3 series

Before

After

F7817C74-36A8-4D57-896E-5C964D9DAB45-295

I debadged it as i was deeply ashamed that i bought a 4 cylinder

It had nothing to do with the fact it looks better

There is a red/pink G reg corolla outside my place with a 50valve badge on the boot.

makes me lol.

This is what not to do

An //M320d

Comes with towbar

why not a towbar? As well as towing (obviously duh!) it stops careless parkers nudging your rear.

I know this is about adding/removing badges but what about the vanity that is a personalised number plate?

I particularly laughed at the Honda Jazz with a 'Type R' badge on the back!!

Hilarious

Got a chrylser thing round my way with bentley badges on!

It seems counter-intuitive though. As said, non car people don't care and car people can see right through it, which means more people will feel inclined to race the people who own these cars, which leads to them being embarressed when they get thrashed by one of these Mk1 Fabia VRSs that I've heard can beat anything with short of 1000bhp ;)

The only badge/sticker I've added to any of my cars is this, purely because someone had them made when we went to Curborough and I thought they were quite funny :D

I had a mate that put a 'turbo' sticker on his 1.4 Nova.

That was 20 years ago.

He's still nicknamed "Turbo" to this day.

Think carefully before spending £5 in Halfords or Ebay.

I've never really understood badging at all - it's a bit weird when you think about it. You know what you've bought, why is it the default for manufacturers to display that on the outside?

I always take them off, personally. It's much more amusing to me when someone underestimates it, rather then getting shown up ;)

Same if I had an M/RS/AMG product - no badges and just leave the car itself to do the talking.

So I really am bemused when someone is trying to make something it's not. I'm annoyed with BMW in this regard as well, for introducing so much 'MSport' nonsense into the standard range - with the same logo. By all means have a 'sports' sub-range, but don't dilute M division doing it.
