Noisy Diesels

Featured Replies

I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere before so bare with me here or direct me to the right thread.

How noisy are the 1.9 and 2.0 Tdi engines in comparison with other non VAG lumps?

Which is quietest ?

Which is the most refined ?

Which would you choose ?

At startup I'd say they're all as noisy, but in general, I've yet to drive a more refined diesel than a VAG car, :) But then I've not driven a Merc or BMW diesel so maybe I've simply not been priveliged enough? (Had the "honour" of a Ford Escort, and Astramax to compare to)

If I had to choose it would be VAG though - The V10 TDI VW Touareg!

(but if we're restricted to 1.9/2.0 then I'd say I'll stick with what I have now)

i have drove a few diesels in the 2.0 class one off the most refined was a pug 2.0 hdi but it was not very quick :)

Get the new BP Ultimate Diesel makes the engine 30% quieter to quote BP :finger: and your wallet 10% Lighter :thumbdwn:

The Honda Accord 2.2 CDTi (or whatever it is!) is very quiet for a diesel.

My boss at work has one for a company car & it's nice & refined to drive, but lacks the power compared to the 1.9 PD TDI, especially for a 2.2 turbo diesel.

The VAG 2.0 TDI is a little quieter than the 1.9 TDI, well the Passat I drove last week was.

Not noticed much difference in refinement between the 1.9PD's and the new 2.0. Whats more worrying for me is the 2.0 doesn't look all that economical.

The Honda engine is excellent, very refined but has a petrol like linear power delivery.

The Renualt DCi engines are good for refinement as well, they are a bit better than the PD's but don't have the power.

I would say the older Ford TDCi's are a little less refined than the VAG units but the new Ford 2.0 as fitted to the new Focus is excellent, it was developed with Peugeot.

The older VAG 90/110 unit is old school diesel though, sounds like an old transit van when at cold tickover. :)

Cheers

VAG engines have the edge on fuel economy and a really good standard torque curve. The competition mostly use common rail technology which is quieter and more refined, but I'd still choose a VAG engine. As Jon TDI said, the Honda engine is an excellent achievement but the engine drives a lot like a petrol one as well!

Ford's TDCI is much more refined than the 1.9 PD unit and also much less "lumpy". I gave my office mate a lift to the garage to pick up his Audi and he was convinced the car was a petrol  I've also heard the new Accord is meant to be very refined, but not had the pleasure of trying one out yet :D

Common rail much quieter than the VAG PD units.....

Driving, as I do, a 1.9 PD TDI 130, I'm always in shock at the noise from outside the vehicle. Sounds like a transit van.......

Inside is only acceptable at low-mid revs, or it turns into the transit again!

Driven a 3 series 2.0 diesel.....very quiet. Although the PDTDI does have more of a KICK to it....

IIRC, the noise of the VAG PD units is due to each injector pump opening & closing, rather than the Common rails, which only have one.....more pumps, more mechnanicals, more noise......

IMHO the 2.0 is quieter than the 1.9 in the octy II, and it's obviously a lot more powerful. Having said that, the 1.9 is significantly more economical, and delivers its power more smoothly (from what I remember of the test drive).

Hope that helps

Good point this. It does depend on temperature. My diesel is very loud for the first 60 seconds or so on a cold winters morning. It soon quitens down.

Also the fuel in it makes a slight difference in my opinion. Put fuel with a higher cetane rating in and it's quiter. BP charge extra, Shell don't

I am looking for a new car at the moment and have just demo three cars;

Honda Accord 2.2 diesel. Quiet, very linear power.

Vectra 1.9 diesel (150bhp) bit noisy, more of a punch when power comes in, power stays in until 5000rpm. Quicker than the accord.

Octavia 2.0 tdi, quickest of the three, most fun of the three, however quite a bit more noisy. Also a fair bit cheaper than the other two.

I have been out today in my new Octavia 2.0 TDi DSG, and took two flash Mercedes drivers for a short drive. They commented how quiet it is!

The Honda Accord 2.2 Diesel is a real pleasure to drive. Very quiet with good handling. I was really dissapointed though to find it didn't even have some of the features of my current 2004 Megane Rush 1.5dCI. No computer, anti-hijack function or even a cover over the timing belt. I also nearly choked when the price with extras totted up to

Very interesting. Different people's perception of what is and what isn't noisy seems to vary. I'll be honest, I think the 2.0TDI Octy is noisy but once your moving you don't really notice. My friend's Golf V 1.9 TDI seems very quiet inside the car at tickover though.

I'm half kicking myself over going for the 6sp manual instead of the DSG. Can't really afford the extra money though and want scope for tuning up to 180bhp and 400Nm Torque which there is debate over the DSG being able to handle.

77 days to go until I get my car though. Could get it sooner but the lease on the Megane runs out then and since it's only costing me

I think sound deadening plays a big part as well.

With diesels, you not only hear the noise but feel the vibrations. My non-PD Ibiza was terrible for tick-over vibration.
