Power steering problems after flat battery

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm having a problem with my mk2 2005 Octavia 1.9 TDI.

One morning it wouldn't start due to a flat battery which has since been replaced. The yellow steering wheel light came on but the car drove normally and the power steering was working perfectly. I've had this happen before but the yellow steering wheel symbol eventually went away.

I have a VCDS at work so I plugged it in and followed the instructions to enable the basic settings using the instructions here

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Skoda_Octavia_(1Z)_Steering_Assist#Adaptation

Ever since I did that the power steering hasn't worked, the car is drivable but the steering is obliviously heavy. I've had an ABS fault on the car as you'll see in the log for some time before the steering issue so I'm wondering is this is the reason I can't set the steering up? Anywho, here's the log.

it used to be that you have to turn full lock to lock to reset the steering pump... not sure if that is the case but when I had my battery replaced I did a full lock to lock and the steering then sorted itself out.

Yeah had to do that a couple of times on mates cars when retrofitting cruise control.

Correct.

I recently had my dash disconnected and after plugging it back in the steering wasn't working.

I did the basic settings but it didn't work.

I then turned the wheel all the way to the right then left. The light went off and the power steering kicked in.

I'm assuming he has driven a few hundred yards in it, and that the light has not cleared itself.

If that's not the case, then as above, go for a drive :)

Even if he drove it wouldn't reset without going through the proper procedure, it's a little different from say an abs light when a new sensor has been fitted and it needs to register the same as all other sensors. You need to go from lock to lock to recalibrate the steering angle sensor so the various control units know the position of the steering wheel/wheels (assuming alignment is good)

Thanks for all of the replys, I appreciate it. I'll try the steering adaptation again and then do the steering stops. I think my problem is I'm trying to get it to work in the workshop and not following the prerequisites. I'll get vcds installed on a laptop and have a buddy help me out with it. I work in a tyre garage so I know my tracking is spot on. If I'd just replaced the battery before I messed with anything this would probably have gone away itself.

I'm stuck driving an Alfa 147 Ducati Corse today, it's a fun little car with 170bhp but feels cheap compared to my Octavia.
