How to remove sidelight bulb?

Featured Replies

I've got the headlight off the car and indoors, but how do you get the side light bulb out?

I've removed the plastic cover but can't get any further.

Advice please?

I find that a off set long nose pliers is the best way of getting the bulb holder out. If you have small hands it is possible with your fingers, there are two small prongs/clips that need to be pressed inwards to release the holder, change the bulb and clip the holder back in place.

Is the sideight behind the rubber grommet rather than the plastic cover? If it isn't I'd like to know as want to replace mine!

Long nose pliers. Mine were a bit stiff and needed a wiggle to get it out.

Just make sure they work before putting the bulb back in the hole. I learnt this the hard way and was very pssd off

Thanks guys.

That's what I was leaning towards but it seemed excessively fiddly considering I'd already removed the headlight from the car.

MereKat: the indicator bulb is behind the twist off plastic bit. The rubber cover houses the high / flood beam.

Ah i see what you mean now! I thought you meant the main cover behind the dipped lights! :D

I'm sure mine is rubber (not the large 80mm or so grommet), may have lost the twist off cover on mine? Going to have to look now! :/

with tiny fingers :)

No kidding!

I've just pulled one if the wires out of the terminal when the pliers slipped off the block...

Anyone know how to remove the terminals?

The hard black plastic fitting is a real git even with long nose pliers and I ended up breaking one of the two legs removing mine, still stays in place with one though.

In hindsight a slotted tube like the barrel of a pen would be better to compress the tabs for removal, stupid design having the fitment down a tunnel.

I cannot remember how the wires fit the bulb holder but I sympathise as I nearly did the same with long nose pliers trying to grip the hard slippery plastic.

Yes replaced mine a nightmare stupid design should have been elongated tube with bulb where cover is taken off .

Did eventually get it out by rotating the bulb holder 90 degrees to make the pins easier to grip.

Still wasn't easy though and I still need to repair the wires / holder.

I used long nose pliers when i fitted my led sidelights........still a bit of a sod of a job.

Yep long nosed pliers and patients.

NOTE to those fitting Error free LED 501 bulbs.....make sure they are inserted correctly as some only work one way i.e. if you insert and they don't come on turn the bulb 180 degrees and re-insert. Test them before putting the light unit back in fully as it's a pain in the a*** to then find the bulb hasn't illuminated, doh!

The morning after replying to the OP, my bloody left sidelight went..........AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

(I'm not blaming KBPhoto)

Now, where did I put that long nose pliers..........

When I did mine, i found my long nose pliers didn't grip too well.

Solution - insert two largish panel pins/needles between either side of the bulb holder's clips and the lamp housing.

Now the holder can be extracted with minimal effort. Trust me, it's a hell of a lot easier than struggling with pliers alone.

Once I'd turned the bulb holder through 90 degrees, so the pins are at the top & bottom if the light cluster, it was so much easier to grip with pliers.

I had this happen to me.......

Happened to me last week also, I had a faulty LED darn!

There seems to be a trend here...

Wonder if Skida have fixed this on the Mk3?

Its a PITA of a job

Certainly is!

Just done it on my 2006 L&K.

Long nosed pliers slipped off and there wasn't enough space to get fingers in without removing the black box thingy (technical term) that is connected to the headlamp to adjust lamp position.

Only car I have ever had where it is easy to remove the headlamp and nigh-on impossible to change a sidelight bulb!

The manual says it should be done by a dealer. Anyone know how much they charge? (So I can tell my wife how much money I just saved and earn lots of brownie points  !)

Hi guys for many months now i have a warning light on the dash and it seems to be the nearside side light out. Attempts to change it did nothing especially as attempts to decouple the wiring socket first failed. I couldnt get leverage to disconnect the full unit socket and so ended up twisting the unit around and just getting enough space to change the sidelight bulb. The old one was blown and blue (any symptom clues there?). Do MK2 2008 L&K take any bulb? Any suggestions on what else to try? Do special sprays help clear **** off connectors?
