Excess exhaust smoke on acceleration.

Featured Replies

Petrol vrs - noticing plenty of smoke on heavy acceleration in rear view mirror. It's ok when cruising. Problem or not??

Mileage?  Any other symptoms?

What color is the smoke?

Seems to be white (don't think there is a blue tinge). Only other symptom of note is I get a slight knock from engine when in neutral and foot not on clutch. As soon as poor foot on clutch the sound goes. Just shy of 5000 mile on the clock.

I would say back to the dealers with it.

It's booked in for 14th march - I'm worried it plus be doing irreparable damage to it in meantime or might just totally pack up!!! I assume warranty would cover me if it does...

Yeah it will cover you fine

Just keep check on engine levels, as worse case Skoda could say negligence to monitor oil, coolant levels voiding warranty claim if it went pop.

Has this happened since new? It could just be that oil has been topped up too high.

Hi

Hopefully I can put you at ease I had exactly the same issue a couple of weeks back, it turned out what looked like smoke under acceleration at around 3500 - 4000rpm turned out to be a build-up of water vapour in the exhaust pipe due to me doing short journeys. The fix is either do longer journeys or in my case the mechanic drilled a small hole in the exhausts to act as a drain, he commented he’d seen this on Audi’s before but never on a Skoda.

I’ve done around 500 miles since the fix and not had the issue reoccur, the car also feels like it’s a bit more power.

To be fair I don't do many long trips - so that could be it.

I've had the same thing and I'm also doing small trips. I gave it a WOT once on a cold morning and my entire rear window got completely misted up because of the water vapour from the exhaust.

Your mechanic drilled a hole in your exhaust?

I really don't think that's a good solution.

:D that amazing! So now it won't pass an MOT!

I also get this on cold mornings and all levels fine, nothing to worry about but if your concerned back to stealers

The mechanic was at a Skoda dealership which is also an MOT test centre so I'm hoping they knew what there doing. I've also spoken to a friend who used to be a DP for an old Skoda dealership and he said it's quite a common fix and usually referred to as a drain.

They drilled a hole in the exhaust so it's safe to say they have no idea what they're doing. That hole will be beginning to corrode as I type this so will only get bigger. Good luck in 3 year when you need an MOT.
