This is usually caused by a failing battery, or maybe the load wire is broken.

 

Or, it may resolve itself, because of the 'expensive' earth wire repair the battery may now re-charge itself after a 10-15 mile trip.

Does seem like an expensive job just replacing a grounding wire and cleaning a few contacts
