mirror woes

Featured Replies

Hi people after a long time away im back to being a superb owner (thank god) ive just bought an 06 2.0 tdi elegance which im very happy with apart from one thing the folding mirrors and mirror adjust does'nt work the fuse seems ok just wondered if anyone had come across this before and how ity can be fixed ?.

I had similar issue when battery was low. Only realised when I eventually needed jump starting. Mirrors popped into place and all been good since.

You did read about the 2.0 TDI before you bought it didn't you?? If not the folding mirrors will be the least of your worries..

Yeah..unfortunately the 2.0 TDI in the Superb mk1 eats oil pumps. I suggest you have a read on the forums about it. It appears to be a case of when not if.

The 1.9 is almost indestructable. Unfortunately the 2.0 is anything but.

Sorry to be the barer of bad news..

Yeah..unfortunately the 2.0 TDI in the Superb mk1 eats oil pumps.....

I think that saying they "eat" oil pumps is somewhat misleading; you make it sound like they fail every 10k! Yes mine did fail at 99k, and all the parts (pump, turbo, balance shafts, sensors etc.) were replaced FOC under goodwill by SUK. Yes I had to pay for the labour which was £750, but If I get another 50k (now on 118k) from the car it'll still have been cheap comfortable motoring for 8 years, so lets have some perspective please. I have a friend who has a 2.0 MK1 with 180k and no problems yet.

PS - oh yes, now I'm waiting for the oil pump the the "awful" 6sp gearbox to fail too...

Sorry, I meant that by it eating its oil pumps that its pretty standard that it will break, not if it will break. And in comparison to your 99k my old boss had one go at 36k and he thought it was a one off so bought another one which went at 73k. Some people have got loads of miles and some not.

As for the gearbox issue, I have no idea about them. I'm just advising about issues the OP might need to consider.

Yeah I agree Chris, I as know from experience they can be problematic.

why whats up with the 6 speed box ? as mine is making a whining noise (the car) so just assumed it needs a wheel bearing and engine tics over very loud ...and sounds a bit rough but the vag lumps have never been the quietest of lumps

The 6 speed manual gearbox suffers from pinion bearing problems which stem from the bearing spacing being too close and the preload for the taper roller bearings being difficult to set correctly. The 5 speed transmission has the pinion bearings at each end of the gearbox casing and is incredibly reliable - I've never seen a really worn one.

A noisy 6 speed transmission will whine in the upper gears at a road speed dependent pitch. It gets steadily worse until the shaft starts to move around, affecting gear selection. The linkage on the 6 speed box is a crazy design too - it gets very sloppy on an old box compared with the 5 speed unit which has a simpler direct linkage into the box - unlike the 6 speed which has a stupid ball joint and relay lever on top.

The final insult is that the 6 speed box gives almost the same gearing as the 5 speed unit in top. At 70 mph there is a difference of 120 engine rpm between top on the 5 speed and top on the 6 speed. In a country with a 70 mph limit, the difference is absolutely negligible. (33 mph/1000 rpm vs. 35). The wide torque span of the PD engines makes more ratios absolutely superfluous. The 6 speed transmission was, in my estimation, a marketing sop for Audi.

2.0 PD oil pump drives almost all let go sooner or later. There are issues of concentricity and shaft depth engagement (later shafts were 100 mm long) but I would rather have an oil pump drive which works all the time...
