Featured Replies

On with trying to put these on after getting a part number off here, I am convinced they are the wrong ones, they will not fit at all, any help?

OK, also found this thread. Basically, you've bought the "Iron Man" springs.

I think they should fit, you've just got to apply the right leverage to accomplish it. I think do the long end into the slot/hole first, then try to lever the returned end around and into place. Given the forces involved, think I'd zip-tie it 1/2 in place in case it sproings off somewhere.

I used zip ties, got then on with a bit if bending and persuasion, weather they will just pop back off is a different story but they seem secure lol

On that last pic, the bottom bit if the spring - you can push it up a bit more so it sits in a bit more nearer to that torx bolt. That's what I've done, secures it a tad more

you got any pics?

Hum. I just put my springs on and put them on different haha

No. Basically lol. If you was to physically push the bottom of the spring up a bit, it would slot back another 5mm ish in to that slot. Hard to explain really. Don't think it'd make major difference anyway Tbh

I did mine so they were sitting.the other way round, e.g the spring pointing to back of the car, didn't like the way the spring looked in that position.

Saw mattvrsestate did it that way so copied him. I prefer the overall look that way you've done em though.

<Bump>

Just ordered the "little" ones.

Car attracted a mention after the MOT that one of the rear calipers was dragging slightly.

Upon inspection, the rubber boot has come off the DS handbrake cable at the caliper end. Need prising back over the casting.

You really do now need to check that the brakes are free on both sides, by removing the callipers and cleaning up all the contact areas, while you have them unbolted wind the pistons fully in and make sure that the handbrake lever/mechanism moves okay - then add the correct external return springs. Oh and try to work out if the handbrake cables are still free to move, all good stuff!

Edit:-  Ha Ha that was my "iron man" springs that you posted the pics off back years ago, car (Passat) has gone "iron man" springs live to get binned some day!

Another Edit:- I bought and fitted a pair of these "small springs" to my wife's 2015 VW Polo as soon as we took delivery of it, though VAG (TRW) seemed to have beefed up the internal return spring on the current models.

Incidentally, mine don't fit like that.... I have the anti-moo kit fitted which replaces fixed bracket with something a little different. The spring ends simply latch over the top of the bracket in my case. Found a handy YOUTUBE video.

That's a handy video but I didn't have those particular springs. I got the double-hook versions. You have to get those in line before pulling, or it disappears down the hole in the handbrake lever. And you have to apply some pressure to the spring to get it over centre... Or the string simply comes off or retreats down the spring.

Get it lined up properly with the coil high and forward and the loose end directly below it. Apply pressure to the spring and pull the string.

On my list of things to do. (when the weather is better of course)B)
