Back calipers gone or return springs?

Featured Replies

Had my car in the garage last week for a pre MOT check ready for next week, he said the back brakes were seized and are going to need replacing soon. They Freed them off for me and all was well until this morning, got to work and the brakes stunk, looked at the rear brakes and one disc was glowing bright red. Now obviously they have been stuck on whilst driving to work, does this mean they now need replacing or will return springs help them to not stick on? I know the rear disc's will probably need replacing now but just trying to find the cheapest option for a few weeks as I have tax and tyres to pay for on Friday. Cheers

One if mine begun sticking, freed it off and it's been fine ever since.

Try giving them a good grease up? What about a second hand pair of calipers?

I would try taking the pads off and cleaning up the slider, pads and the steel shims first.

The Garage took them off and free'd them up like I said guys, worked fine for 2 days now this has happened. If I need new calipers dan I'm just gunna but the bullet and buy some 256's will just have to be skint for a few weeks I think

If they have cleaned everything up and its still happening then it sounds like a duff calliper.

they did say they wouldn't last much longer, was expecting to get a few more weeks out of them but never mind. New calipers it is, perfect time to upgrade lol

That's what I've done with mine, well my calipers are fine but my rear discs are work and calipers need re-painting. So seen it as an excuse to upgrade :)

My handbrake would stick on within a few days of freeing it off and the springs cured mine but yours sounds like calliper sticking not the handbrake release arm. Make sure you get the springs whatever you do for the sake of a few quid they're well worth fitting

i did initially take it in because the handbrake wasn't working and thought it needed a new one but it didn't, the handbrake works now but it has to be pulled quite high to be put on, could this be the problem?

That just sounds like the handbrake needs adjusting.

Spray the arm with wd40 and use mole grips to work it forward and backwards to free it off then I'd not use the handbrake until you get the springs just leave it in gear. Pretty sure that will fix it

You need the carriers too mate for the callipers to bolt to. From the looks of it they don't come with that kit. Have you got 312s on the front then?

I thought they were just a straight swap? Have to order them as well now ha. an standard brakes on front with brembo discs and Ferodo DS performance pads, far better than 312's IMO

Don't think they are as the octy rears are vented and ours are solid. Wonder if it will be unsettled having those on the back and standard size on the front

why would it be unsettled ? Lol

why would it be unsettled ? Lol

Because you're going nearly the same size as the fronts. Sure people on here say it unsettles them but then again could be forum scare mongering

i will do mate, the front brakes now with the Ferodo pads in are extremely good, nearly went through the windscreen the first time I slammed them on lol

Are the pistons the same size?

Far better than bigger discs and calipers!!!!???

Not a sniff, put the same pads in both set ups and the bigger ones will allways be better. :)

i couldn't tell you to be honest. Obviously with the same pads they would be better yeh but I'm saying I see no point in me upgrading to 312's when I'm running them pads and discs, rather be running 288's with Good pads and good discs than 312's with standard discs and pads :) lol .. More than enough stopping power in the DS pads they are awesome

How much did you pay Tom?

They seem to be £151 for the 312mm calipers!
