Motorway cruising mpg?

Featured Replies

Hey!

I did a short 1 hour trip on thr motoway today in my 2013 1.2htp 70bhp. I was going between 70 and 80mph the entire time, so i wasnt on an economy run of any sort. I was impressed to find id averaged 50mpg at the end of it. I was quite surprised, considering its a 1.2 petrol.

It must be down to the 3000rpm 70mph, and 3400rpm at 80mph that the newer ones have.

So, it got me thinking. What kind of mpg do you lot get in similar circumstances in the other engines then?

I imagine the diesels do very well!

Cheers

  • Yep very true.   I hope everyone with a vRS enjoys it. But the examples I've driven have struggled off the line in anything other than bone dry, warm, smooth tarmac (Even our 1.2TSi DSG Does) and th

Recently sold 1.6 petrol Fabia 2007(57)reg. 75,000 miles. Regularly got 42mpg even at 70mpg motorway trips. I was very satisfied and aiming for similar with my Yeti, it's up to 39 at 9,000 miles.

Thats not bad for a 1.6 though!

Mines currently got just under 8000 miles on the clock.

Is it a massive increase when the mileage goes up abit then?

When we were coming back to Scotland after picking the car up from Wales we were taking our time coming back and had the cruise control set at 65mph and we saw 69mpg......which blew our minds a bit especially a car with very low miles....by the way it's a TDi 105 Monte

Thats the year before the gear ratio change and massive engine overhaul then? Amazing how much difference the overhaul made then!

My mpg wasnt changing too much depending on gradient. Only went down alot when i floored it to stop somebody undertaking me haha.

I thought the diesel would do well mate! Its into his element on half decent sized runs isnt it :).

Good to hear :).

On one gentle 40 mile trip last year that was almost all on the 50 mph limited section of the M1, my tsi 86 showed an indicated 57mpg average. At normal motorway speeds it's around the 50 mark.

Mid 35s for me. Don't care though, the 1.4TSI is just far too much fun to be bothered. And before you ask, it no longer has a drink problem (oil),,,,,

Thats fair enough mate. If your not doing that many miles, it doesnt matter anyway eh :).

Atleast its not drinkin it like a 2stroke anymore ;).

in my Monte TDI got me 50.9mpg, including London > Sheffield and back and a weeks worth of running about west London in traffic etc.

car's only done around 2000miles so not really run in yet, i expect it to improve once it loosens up a bit.

I also read an engineering paper about small capacity TDi efficiency and was surprised to find they respond better to slightly more RPM - theres a point in the rev range where running slightly more RPM and boost makes for much better mpg. I started driving around at 30mph with about 1500rpm around town and have been getting +5/7mpg since.

My dad has seen 72mpg on a run back from Plymouth to the lakes in the past in a 1.6 TDI elegance estate

I read on here about the tdi revving abit more. I cant remember what revs people were saying worked best for them though.

I know my htp is in the torque and at its most efficient between about 1700 and 3000. But i dont have a turbo to spool up haha.

72mpg is awesome. Imagine what it could get if the fabia was abit more aerodynamic aha

Approx 40 mile round trip on the A1 and A19 yesterday to go to Durham, averaged bang on 44 mpg with 4 of us in the car.

Little bit of overtaking to pee off a Fiesta Ecoboost but mostly 70 MPH.

That will have been the 79 or 98 bhp ecoboost you were showing your pace to i take it,

& not a 123 bhp 3 cylinder one?

Don't know, just kept overtaking then pulling in front of me so I got a bit peed off that's all, didn't buy my Monte to race anything anyway, don't need to have pseudo 180bhp hatches to show everyone that I need to compensate for a lack of man muscle.

Anyway the most I have seen has been close on to 50 mpg, not diesel economy but it a lot quieter and smoother.

I regularly get 40-42mpg doing a chunk of M6 every day - in a vRS 1.4 twincharger.

PMSL @ #14.   'Psuedo' = Fake, or pretend, not the real thing,

(maybe given the fast look but just the regular engine 86 or 105 ps.)

Maybe the Oxford dictionary will in the future use 'Monte Carlo Fabia' as an example as a Psuedo Hot Hatch.

well some hatches actually have 180 ps, so hardly Psuedo,

& can overtake safely because thy still have some poke available when 4 up and cruising at Motorway speed

& still return in the 40's.

Has the poke but handles like a barge.

Anyway, the thread is about motorway mpg not how fast you car can go, get yourself on the vRS forum if you want to talk about going fast and making youself feel like you're a big boy now.

We all know that vRSs are the bset and fastest cars in the world so I'm happy for you.

LOL

Excuse me, but was it not off topic when someone with a car mentioned that they had to show a Fiesta driver how well a 105 ps car could go. "to pee off a  Fiesta ecoboost."

Since 'you' raised the vRS, and speed,

does it not handle just like a Monte Carlo?

Is 70 mph not the same speed what ever car it is done in?

Yes, that's how I know they handle like a barge.

If you look at what I said, I was doing 70mph apart from when I d******d was trying ot overtake me then pull in, no one said I was trying to race him or show him a thing or two.

It wasn't you in the Fiesta by any chance was it, maybe a courtesy car while yours was in getting topped up with oil.

That's all I'm going to say, my Monte gets round about 44-50mpg on the motorway.

"Little bit of overtaking to pee off a Fiesta Ecoboost but mostly 70 mph",   OK i believe you.

Mate. The vrs's aren't a fast car. They're nippy, but on the scheme of things, they're chicken feed. So pipe down.

And Gaz, Id rather have the1.2tsi aswel. I thought they might get a little more than 50mpg tbh, given its a little more powerful, but then again, its probably more consistent. I average around 45mpg on regular driving, if im not giving it some or going up alot of steep hills (alot of those around here haa)

I guess 50mpg is pretty good for a petrol though

I would just dip under 6L/100km economy on a sustained 100kph run, which is around 45mpg. It takes more discipline than I have to break the supposed combined cycle by much on a long run; it used to be easy in my old 2L Focus: maybe because there wasn't much to gain by putting the foot down. I do think VW has a knack for over-achieving on the official tests.

Otaylor38,

A nippy and can be economical Fabia for about the same price as other specced up Fabias and no more to insure.

able to match the economy of all the other Petrol Fabias.

Nobody said anything about fast on here,

speed of a Fabia is only mentioned by the Monte Carlo driver.

It seems to be 1.2 petrol drivers that like to try digs at 1.4tsi petrols.

Often it appears ones that have not driven both the 1.2 tsi & the 1.4tsi,

they can do the same speed on a journey and return the same MPG or can if the driver want to.

a Fiesta Ecoboost can also be a nippy car in its 3 flavours,

& the 4th flavour with the greater cc has the same nippyness as a 1.4TSI Fabia.

(not fast obviously, just chicken feed.)

george

I have a 1.2tsi Monte and a fiesta ecoboost 98ps

They both have a similar amount of power around town.

I haven't done a motorway trip in either but on a 12mile trip on 'a' roads I average 60mph and get 50mpg ish from the monte (7k) and up to 62mpg in the fiesta (1k).

Just FYI I can't stand the ride or driving position of the fiesta it handles well but is no fun and doesn't make me smile, the monte however......

Thats good to hear Jonro. Iv always liked the look of the fiesta from the exterior, just not keen on the interior haha.

Everybody who iv spoken to says the 1.0 eco boost is an absolute gem though.

And George, he merely stated he put his foot down abit to get past a fiesta. He didnt say they were racing, and he didnt state his monte was the fastest car in the world. My htp will get past a cruising 70mph 180bhp vrs, if its doing just that, 70mph. I think your picking straws at what he said and taking it out of context.

And yes they are chicken feed. I wouldnt have a vrs for various reasons, but if you like it, thats all that matters. You dont have to prove yourself on here
