Mystery of the Plastic Clip solved. Or Maybe not?

Featured Replies

Having had several Mk1 Octavia estates going back to a metallic purple S reg demonstrator on loan for a couple of days when they were first invented, I think they are great cars. Current one is a late 04 with the big engine and six speed box showing more miles than the Starship Enterprise.

That little plastic clip on the lower offside windscreen, what a simple but great idea! But what is it actually for?? I always assumed it was for holding pay and display tickets etc to avoid having to stick them on the inside of the windscreen.

Drove the trusty Skoda 2000 miles to Prague and back on business last month. Obviously Skodas everywhere but mainly shiny new ones. Our car with strange english plates and the driver on the wrong side got a few second glances. In 10 days saw only one rear engined one. Even early Favorits and Felicias are not common. I thought I had at last solved the mystery of the little clip. When travelling on the Czech motorways you need to buy a Vignette, a little ticket which half must be filled in with the vehicle reg number and kept in the car and the other half displayed in the windscreen. It was well after midnight when we got to the Czech border and having been travelling all day we just wanted to get to the hotel.

Stopped and bought the pass from a little cabin at the first services we came to. The bloke was friendly but spoke no English. The info on the back clearly showed to display the ticket on the lower offside, where the little clip is, (which would be on the wrong side in a LHD car for the car park tickets). Obviously that is what it was designed for! 15 year mystery solved!

We left Prague a few days later and got pulled up by the Czech Police, spot checking the Vignettes. Ours was in date and clearly displayed but because it was behind the clip and not stuck to the windscreen  (you are meant to peel off a layer of clear plastic to make it sticky) it landed me a 300Kc on the spot fine, about a tenner! The police spoke perfect english and gave me a leaflet which fully explained what to do with the sticker. They agreed that the shortened instructions (in Czech) on the back of the Vignette where not clear but would not budge about the fine. Having looked at their guns, I decided to cut my losses and not push the point any further!

The moral of this story is never assume anything!!  :giggle:

I always thought the little plastic clip was something a previous owner had put in, assuming you mean the clear plastic one?

Yes thats the one!

Jeez, i thought it was something to hold a wire for a hands free kit a previous owner had installed

lol I thought someone had put it there too... ripped it out as it was in the way of my suction phone holder

That's what the salesman told me its for , holding pay and display tickets

I wsnt sure about it when i got my octy either, then i realised it was handy for parking tickets...

the Vignette thing though? thats a bit odd - heres a clip to hold something the police will fine you for if not stuck to the glass...

maybe when the car was designed the vignette wasnt a sticker, so the clip was really handy...

haha when i got my car (vrs) i thought it was to to protect a crack on the windscreen from any vibrations or to dampen bumps incase of any shocks that would cause the crack to spread!...until i realised it was very handy for parking tickets haha!

As above, it's a parking ticket holder. Not many cars have them actually, some Volvos do

Come in handy for me today when i was in Salford near the new BBC headquarters.

I use it to hold parking tickets.
