Large Screen Tablet

Featured Replies

I'd like to get a ~10 inch tablet. My Dad got a Nexus 7 for Xmas and I really like it but I understand the Nexus 10 by comparison's quite old and due for replacement later this year. I've also looked at iPads but always feel that I'd be paying a significant premium for the branding and badge - is this fair though? I'd be looking at a Wi-Fi only tab but with a stack of music and ripped movies would like a decent amount of storage space.

I'm most likely going to be using it for surfing the web, watching iPlayer etc.

What should I do...... buy the current Nexus 10, wait for the Nexus 10 Mk2, buy an iPad (which one though - which version are we on now and when's the next one due out) or is there something else out there which I'm not looking at?

Cheers

Chris

Asus do a 10" version of their current Memo pad range. Otherwise the transformer range us quite good.

I think the memo price is about £190 and the transformer is about £40 more. Not sure of the difference between the two.

Or a galaxy tab 10, which often has deals on hotukdeals - usually at Tescos

Having had a few iPad's and also the Nexus 7, I can't help but think the Apple tablets are just a bit more polished in what they do. Also, it's not often that I think the 'same' Android app is better than the 'equivalent' Apple one.

There's got to be some reason for Apple charging their extortionate prices after all!

Today's tech will always be old by 2moro.

Depends wot u want it for.

If the old Nexus 10 is powerful enough and has the functionality u need,

and if is the Nexus u want - then go for it!

The dropped in price alone is worth more than paying more for a Nexus 10 mk2.

If u need the more powerful mk2 or hope it will sell for more in future,

then maybe u need an iPad?

My children had cheap £50 tablets and until thy were older and playing faster games,

I still bought them a Nexus7(2013) rather than an iPad Mini.

Then again

Tesco s own tablet is rated very good,

as is the Amazon Kindle.

Buy wot u need and for the price u are comfortable with,

than for something more pricey which may be more than u need...

If money no object - yup, an Apple!

Just to flaunt it :-)

In the early days of both iPhone and ipad from what I've read apple "incentivised" brands to create apps and had teams to help the big brands with their apps.

I'm sure there must be some of this still going on as some apps have a better finish and extra features not seen in the Android versions. Facebook and Twitter are 2 such examples I've compared with friends apple devices.

I'm typing this on a Samsung galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition 32Gb 4G/LTE.

You will be lucky to find one in the UK, I imported mine from Hong Kong for £465 & I bought a 64Gb MiSDXC card to insert in it, it takes a Micro Sim card, I have a 3 Sim card installed.

I have flashed mine with a European firmware to get rid of the Chinese biased firmware that came installed, no problems encountered with the dreaded Samsung KNOX either.

It plays 99.9% of games I've installed with aplomb and I have used a DVD ripper set to full HD and put all 3 series of Mrs Brown's Boys on it for some entertainment, it plays that again with arrogant ease, although I did install MX Player Pro & Poweramp for music play back.

Battery life has so far been quite impressive. Thoroughly recommend it.

There is a reason.  Apple's profit on each tablet is considerably more than that of their rivals.

Don't forget the Bluetooth issue with the iPad & iPhone in that you can't do data transfers between anything other than another iPad or iPhone, you can't transfer between one of those and an Android or Windows Mobile device.

Which you can do with the latter.

Then you can't expand the memory of either and if you want anymore memory the initial price goes up at an an exponential rate.

32Gb is the minimum I would even consider, 16Gb isn't much and you don't actually get 16Gb, you only get about 12 of usable memory, which is eaten rapidly by a few apps, music and videos. So isn't really worth considering.

I don't know if you can use an OTG cable so you can use a USB drive as well, which you can do with Android,.

What are you used to and what system does your phone run on?

These days the manufacturers are doing their best to lock you into one platform.

If you have an iPhone theny you'll probably find an iPad would work well for you.

If you have a Samsung android phone then a Tab will work best.

A Nexus 10 will work well with any other android phone.

Agree with others that 32Gb is a min. 16Gb isn't enough after the OS takes up its chunk.

If you're getting a Nexus10 for a good price because the new one is about to come out then I'd get the old one. The Nexus products are good for the price.

[Edit]I see from your sig you've a Motorola Razr. I'd advise a Nexus 10 for you.

Just be aware that you can't expand the memory of the Nexus range, unless you can use an OTG cable.

Or the Apple range.

Some of the Samsung range have SDCard slots but not all.

Best to do your homework on what you need before you commit.

If you're just doing some surfing and watching catchup tv you might not need it. I've a 32Gb NExus 7 and I've never felt the need for additional storage but I don't keep much media on the device.

The Asus models have sd slot and support otg. I think you even get the cable

I've just upgraded from a ipad2 32gb to an ipad air wifi 64gb, I looked at Samsung tablets and to be honest the air is extortionate at £559 (if you buy any apple devices I recommend john Lewis as you get 2 years warranty intends of 1 and there next day delivery is brilliant) but the apple is just better finished and as others have said the App Store is just better (android apps are getting better).

To expand the memory on tablets that don't take sd cards etc I recommend the seagate wireless plus, that's going to be my next purchase. You can use its 1TB of HDD via wifi and stream music, pics and videos.

Where did you buy it? How easy is it to change the Chinese android OS?

I bought it from a company called t - dimension: http://www.t-dimension.com/revamp/

As it's a Hong Kong based company, it will be a Chinese biased machine, so you need to install a EU based firmware onto it, for that you download a small bit of software called Odin 3.07 and the correct firmware and flash it.

I use these two:

http://samsung-updates.com

http://www.sammobile.com/

You need to chose a firmware with the Country Code: BTU

Xda developers is the place to read about it. I find it quite easy to do, having done it a few times to different phones, but some say it's not really for the faint hearted.

I'm sure others here can explain it in a better way than I can ever do.

Just be aware that you will have to pay the VAT on it, but it will still be cheaper than sourcing it in the UK, you can also find them on Ebay, but again you must allow for the VAT to be added, which is about £80.

Depending on your budget you could always look at the Sony Xperia. It's not a bad match for the iPad, although it's not far off the price either, but for those of us that don't pray at the altar of Apple it's a smart option.

You could but it doesn't have the same memory & connectivity options.

Again if you want to have a tablet with 3G, 4G/LTE, you will be restricted to 16Gb, if you want a 32Gb machine you're restricted to Wi-Fi only and use of a router at home or use the tethering functionality of your mobile phone and that's dependant the on whether your mobile operator allows you to do it.

3 restricts it on certain contracts.

The nexus 10 has an exceptionally nice high resolution screen. Not oversaturate either. If your budget permits, you may want to wait for the 12" tablets that are on the way.
