Nice little project for you there, a man always has to have a Project.  I like the way you are keeping it standard, it shouldn't depreciate anymore if you look after as you are doing now.

If you need to add a few tuning parts or advice on the engine  in the future then a company called Blink Motorsport up in Cheshire are the guys to see.

thanks sootie :) some way to standard yet though, I need a tan interior (apart from the seats I have) wooden trim , the wooden nardi steering wheels are £80 + :o

first : got to fix the issues.... passenger electric window, and clutch! will do a gearbox oil change at the same time, and it needs a new rubber gator on the gear linkage, heat is blasting through the transmission tunnel from the exhaust!

second: get all the interior bits it needs to be OE , very important :)

third: address the bodywork..... get it all the right shape again, then wrap it!

then it should be done :)

only mods (classic insurance doesn't want mods) will be the under bonnet brace (done) and some style (or roll) hoops :)

the Original spec idea is for the future value... (I mod the vRS for track! lol) one of the classic magazines said recently the mark I MX5 is dying out because they are all rusting away, and in 10 years time a good example of an ORIGINAL mark I will fetch about £10,000 ! :o

lets see how it goes :) it only cost me £600, I may have spent a couple of hundred on it since, but as Mark saw, I kinda like it.... may end up just wanting to keep it!

cars like this that are so "mechanical" and "raw" givind the "proper" driving experiance of you being in control, are getting rarer!

thanks for the comments :)

There are a lot of mark 1's around, thousands actually.   £10000 seems a bit optimistic to me but given time when most of them are metamorphosed into Westfields, it will gain value.

I've doubled the  value so far by putting 12 months MOT on it! lol...... £700 is what people are asking for cars with NO MOT or TAX .... a good one at the moment is about £3000 :)

there are lots around... but rust is a real problem... the reason you can get an engine for £80 or a gearbox for £30 is because they outlive the cars, the cars just fall apart... you can buy them for a few hundred quid, but they are rotten, and need floors and sills doing.... mine doesn't :) a car without rot is £700 with NO mot and about £1000 with a good MOT :)

that can only get better.... when people buy them for £500 and find they need £600 of chassis work, they just give up !

I'll be keeping a tally of all work done , as I have a massive history folder with this car already (important!) and hopefully the value will stay ahead of the cost !

still got the vRS to think about, and I want some bilstien dampers! lol... circa £500! :o may have to stop spending on baby phantom for a while , now its "stable" lol...

Totally agree about driving the MX5.

Having recently done a 600 mile return trip to visit relatives in the Yeti, we went out in the MX5 & they are Chalk & Cheese.

Yeti - you get in & guide the car to your destination

MX5 - You get in & engage with the car to drive to your destination.

Had one of the rear wheel bearings sorted, one of the track rod ends sorted, drivers fog lamp now replaced as we knew about we when bought the car.

The soft top hood catch above driver was a surprise as it wouldn't lock down securely & popped open going over a bump & that had to be replaced, front pads were quite low & these have been replaced.

Now found other rear bearing needs doing then a full wheel alignment check, this will be a next month job

Except the wheel bearing, the other items have been £30 - £40 to replace.

SWMBO didn't open the garage door properly & has bent the electric aerial so it will not fully retract ( Radio came on when ignition switched on & aerial automatically extended) oops   , breakers want £30 but seen that I can get new for that price.

I will admit to having spent out on the best idea Skoda have ever fitted to a car & modded to the MX5 - A stick on parking ticket holder

Also fitted a black mesh grille in the opening as it was remarked that the radiator had taken a slight beating in 12 years.

Have you thought about getting a set of original MK1/ eunos shocks & springs ?

I have found that MK2 & MK2.5 had Bilstiens fitted as std, & for some reason my mk2.5 does not have these, looks like they have been replaced in the past with just bog std ones.

As I have been told that I will probably get an advisory on my current set of springs ( the powder coat is flaking) when it comes to MOT in Jan, so putting pennies aside to get some original MX5 Bilstiens fitted just before the MOT.

My Local Skoda dealer wanted to buy my MX5 off me when he saw it & offered more than i had paid when i went to do some of the Yeti paperwork ( before it arrived ) he affirmed his offer before i had any of the work done  . SWMBO would have hung / drawn & quarterd me if i had let him have the car . :o

as far as I'm aware, my eunos is on the original (although it had a rear spring replaced last year) Eunos improt spec, lower springs and bilstien dampers.... I base this on the fact ot looks lower than the English MX5 (which seem to have huge arch gaps!) and there is still yellow on the dampers (beneath the underseal!) giving them away as the bilstien items.... I was worried when I saw in the history that a rear spring had recently been replaced, as I though they would just put an MX5 spring in , and they would be uneven hights! :o

Hre is mine...

and here is English MX5

Mazda%20MX-5%20(4).jpg

due to the massive noise it makes (including popping on change up at max revs) I thought it may have an aftermarket exhaust on it.... I was looking at it yesterday , and could have sworn its stainless steel , and not mild steel, then read the eunos came with a stainless exhaust! lol....

so in conclusion, I "Think" it has the original bilsteing import suspension, and original stainless exhaust! lol..

Nice choice of photos - love the MX on steelies!  B)

I beleive that was the spec without power steering! lol..

I believe you are correct :D

Although there are also UK-spec NAs without PAS, that have alloys. Oh, the luxury

here is the latest addition to the eunos :P

I had a uk 1800cc MX5 some years ago and could now kick myself for selling it. It came from the original owners,a rather nice retired couple from Cheltenham who had garaged it all of its life and only ever used it in the dry.

It had not a mark or spot of rust anywhere and would now be an investment. I sold it as it was a base model without PAS although they had specified Daisy Alloys. It's replacement was a 1600cc Eunos which was in many ways nicer. But would probably be less desirable long term.

Bet he had a sticker on the back   "BMW inside"

  • Author

lol.. nope, but (of course it said BMW on the rocker cover) he had a "M power" plate on the bulkhead behind the engine, pure ford pop hotrod otherwise!

Are you sure you didnt use the ford pop as a excuse to take a picture of the nice young lady!  :D  My dad has a standard ford pop & has made me promise when i inherit it i wont do something to it like the one in the picture.

oohhhh Mikey ;) most of the hotrods there were ford pops! (of course!) and most have V6's! :o you HAVE to hotrod it ;) (unless its a minter of course!)

a bit off topic, but because of the interest, here is the BMW engine ;)

All this rear wheel drive Mazda driving Dave might mean you forget how to drive the Fabia.  How Fast is just around the corner and Sparkly seems to be the man to beat, as I no longer have a Fabia it leaves you to uphold the honour and keep the Newbie in his place.....

MX-5 is looking good mate, will this be venturing onto the track at any point?

  • Author

still cant really push the eunos yet, I think I must do a little track session with it, just to gain confidence, unlike a modern hot hatch, where you get it wrong and the ESP saves you, this will spit you into the path of an oncomming lorry and (or off into a tree) and kill you! lol...

fabia hasn't moved for two days! lol... but its all good ;)

sparkly has done some "proper" mods since I was last up against him on track, AND he has gained confidence since then... If he gets some RSR's I don't think I'll even bother trying to beat him! PMSL...... If he's still on road tyres, I'll give it a go ;)

I have to do better this time, with proper tyres, and non fading brakes :)

It will be interesting to see how much faster he is with all the mods compared to us last year, then we can work out the true cost of every tenth of a second..

He has some real determination behind the wheel as I found at CC, combine this with a bit more experience and driving to the line he should be really quick.

Let's see what happens as How Fast is a different scenario with the clock running it makes you try harder and in turn slows you down, aggression is not the best way..

Eunos, tail happy, you need a big car park and get a feel for it, learn to steer from the rear  :p

That engine looks a bit lost in there :giggle:

indeed! he was overdriving at coomb though, making mistakes, and getting the wrong lines, thats the only reason i got him.....

he will nail the lines in an hour at how fast, and the extra toys on his car, and his mad late braking should do the trick! lol... I will be better this time, after the tuition I had at oulton park :)

eunos: indeed.... the thing is, when pushing on along a country road, the rear stepping out isn't an issue under traction... but there is NO understeer... so you just go faster and faster.. but then what? STILL no understeer, so at some point, its going to go backwards! lol...

haven't mastered it... I cant on the road (don't get me wrong I CAN go quick ;) ) but I cant drive it like Colin drove his old supercharged mx5.....

I need a track! lol...

Inspiration and Tutorial Video for you Sharky..
