I like the look of it, but the lights are a bit odd. Different though! Not sure I'm convinced over the bootlid/rear light design either. WIll have to look at one in the flesh.

On the weight, I'm sure the blurb was saying they were looking to beat the Mk1 weight. An amazing achievement if they get close to that really, considering the safety systems and design constraints they face these days. Allowances for pedestrian safety etc, that was never even given a thought 25 years ago :)

I have ABS, an airbag and side impact bars in a Mk1 - what more do you need...   :notme:

And if a pedestrian steps out in front of me at night - well they get stabbed by a pop up headlight...   :D

I agree , they have gone back to the formula of the mark I and it seems to work really well..... forget the front too, look at the back! lovely from that angle, the lights there remind me of a little jag f-type!

right, this is what my hood looks like under heavy rain, after buying some proper treatment stuff, aparently the water should be beading! lol....

I will put another pic up in rain after I have finished the treatment :)

Where is it leaking in?

Looking at that I'd guess it's a replacement hood so it might not be leaking in through the hood itself - it's more likely to be a blocked drain cup behind the headrest or a cracked rain rail running round the base of the hood that is causing water to come in on the rear shelf (either than or the rain rail has been taken off to fit the hood and hasn't been put back properly such that it is leaking in through the attachment bolt holes at the base of the hood).  I speak from experience having done my own hood replacement!

The only leak I've ever had through the material itself was on the OE vinyl hood where it had cracked above the side windows or where I had a hole in it below the rear bodywork where the two layers of hood either side of the rear window overlap each other (that was a pain to get at and repair!)

I dont think hes saying that its leaking

Mine is treated and beads with light water/rain showers, but not with constant rain...Its canvas mohair, so it will be waterproof

the hood is quite new, and isnt leaking, its the window seals, I need a new motor and mech in the passenger side, it wont close fully, hence the tape,,,, think I fixed the drivers side leake, just wasn't making contact with the rubbers properlu....

all door window seals! lol..

How have you adjusted things?

There are two bolts on the underside of the door that allow some movement of the window mechanism.  Loosen then and you can move the base nof the mech outboard to move the top of the window inboard.

Also the rubber window seals are in stainless steel runners that are fitted to the hood frame by screws through slots in the runners.  This again allows some adjustment of the seals but usually it is the foam seal between the runners and the hood frame that degrade allowing water to pass through.  They need removing, cleaning and then some sealant when refitting.

And finally if it is leaking from the joint above the quarterlight it's usually because the quarterlight frame has bent outwards over time.  If you open the door and brace it against your knee you can usually realign it without too much problem, taking care not to crack the quarterlight itself.

Looks like you're right Chris - my mistake!

As for the Mohair mine's the same - it beads with light rain but not constant rain, despite treating with AG hood protector.

excellent information there that I didn't know! I will look at adjustment for the drivers side , but leave the passenger side until I get a new mech in :)

big compliment coming from you mate! its one of the better features of the car, and needs looking after to remain "as new" then i wont need to be replacing for when the car is finished, so I figure its worth putting some effort in ;)

Why?

Does it leak?

  • Author

no. I just dont drive it in the rain ;) rust is the enemy of the NA!

Oh....Big rustproofing job then?

  • Author

if you look near the begining, the whole drivers side floor and sill were rusted through and needed repairing..... this has been done, and I have had it undersealed ect , but the passenger side has never been touched, and being an import it was never undersealed ect .....

I'm simply making sure that there is no chance the sills will ever fill up with water again ;)

plus, its a 3rd car, its whole point is getting the roof off ;)

Very true

I didn't realise how big a problem rust is on MX5's until I bough my wife her latest one and then looked on a forum.  This is her 4th including a brand new one a couple of cars ago.  As this one was bought for banger money on a 53 plate and is tidy apart from the sills I think we will be able to use it for a couple of years and maybe throw a bit of money at it next year to have the bottom done properly.  As she only does 2 miles a day 3 days a week it is rally just a banger but she loves it and has the roof down at every opportunity (and berates others for not doing) I thin it is worth the money compared to the less than 2 year old Audi A3 that we got rid of that was doing the same mileage.

Just need to find a body man good enough to tackle the job next back end and she will have her Angels MX5 for a good few years to come and it will owe us nothing.

Oh and by the way love the roof now you have treated it but it just means I shall have to do hers as well as get her a fancy new exhaust....thanks Chris. :D

Regards Chris

As far as I can tell, the MK3 is not as susceptable Dave

Good one Chris..LOL

The sills just in front of the rear wheels have three layers of steel in em but tend to trap water if the hood drains or sill drain slots get blocked and over time rust from the inside out. Usually by by the time you see it through the stone chip paint its gone and needs a fair bit of repair but its usually repairable.

They were all undersealed at the factory though contrary to popular belief. They were all made on the same lines in nakajima or Hiroshima and were treated the same regardless of end market.
