fluid in the transmission

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I own octavia 2008, 1.9tdi, 5 speed manual car. The problem is I am not satisfied with the gear shifting. It's kind of grinding, i am not sure about sound, but I am speaking about feeling. I did showed the car to two different Skoda dealers with no luck, they just answered the car was OK. So I decided to change fluid in the tranny. And here the interesting part comes. First of all, according to the manual of my transmission, it should be filled with 1,9 ltr of 75W fluid. But I drained only about 0,9 - 1 ltr. Then I started filling up and again I could fill only about 1 ltr. The search for info about all VW cars of this year with identical engines, gearboxes and platforms, I came accross the VW manual, which stated, that because of engine tilt, filling was not possible through the fill hole and should be done through the reverse gear sensor. However, skoda was not meantioned in that list of VW cars (only golf, jetta, etc). Now I am confused: where have my tranny's fluid gone (drained only 1 ltr) and how to fill correct amount of oil.

Thanks

Hi,

There is a second drain point (a selector pin shaft is removed underneath to allow more oil out).

The selector pin is removed after the selector mechanism is locked on top of the box.

use a new seal on refitting   do NOT touch the gear shift whilst doing the draining

I have changed oil in gearbox on the same model at around 90k for poor gearshifting and sticking syncros ,I drained out as much oil as possible through drain hole and refilled same amount oil through fill plug at bulkhead side of gearbox and also used a tube of molyslip , I have just got rid of car with 205k the gearshift was as good as when we got it new . you cant drain all the oil out of the box due to the cavities on the inside of the casing holding oil .
