Featured Replies

Hi i own a skoda felicia i would like to know the right setting for the carb mixture i have a pierburg 2e3 carb

the right setting is when:

- the idle speed is smooth at 800 rpm

- the exhaust emissions are minimum (CO < 0.5%)

And without a gas analyzer how ?

The mixture in a Carb engine is something that relates closely to the condition and mileage of your engine: there won't be an exact setting that will work for any engine. If you have to adjust it yourself, make sure you are familiar with the correct screw, as most carbs will have one screw for limiting the airflow that only works whilst the engine is idling, and then a main mixture screw, which is usually sealed into it's bore on the side of the carb. If you need to alter the main mixture screw, then gently screw it in fully, and then back out again by approximately two and a half turns. It will help at this point if you have an assistant turning the engine over at the same time. continue to unscrew the mixture screw slowly!, until the engine starts without any throttle applied, then unscrew it a further quarter turn only!!. Next you need to road test the car: take your tools if necessary to the bottom of a long straight uphill road, not too steep though!. Then drive the hill until you get to fourth gear: if the car still tries to accelerate uphill in fourth gear then the mixture is roughly correct, and any further tuning should be carried out using an exhaust gas analyser. If the car will not accelerate in fourth, then repeat the test: each time you unscrew the mixture screw by a quarter of a turn. If your engine is not a standard one, then do get it set up on a rolling road, by a professional, instead of using this method!, as the jets within your carburettor may need to be changed first!. hope that helps.

@Favorit Fan

where did you learn this method from?

And without a gas analyzer how ?

with a vacuum meter like so.

set for stable, maximum vacuum.

From a series of repair manuals for all types of car, that are published in our country by a company called Haynes Publishing: Hence we refer to them as "Haynes Manuals". They give advice and instruction on how to remove, dismantle and re-assemble all the separate systems fitted to the car.

I have both Felicia and Favorit haynes manuals and they are far from being the holy grail of wisdom.

so it's not like I never heard of haynes...

furthermore in none of those manuals there is not such procedure for setting the right mixture as you described.

haynes manuals describe the method recommended by Pierburg engineers.
