FREE SOFTWARE UPDATE

Featured Replies

Seems a very sensible idea to me. There must be enough Superb owners on this site to create a bit of a fuss. I do have the latest map software but would be happy to participate. Ideas anyone. We could perhaps start a new thread asking for email addresses and then email them to Skoda UK?

I emailed Skoda UK and received a call from a very nice chap called John who was quizzing me about where I'd heard about it because mine was the second query in the last day or so, I said I found out from Briskoda - he's a member too but wouldn't give me his username when pressed. Anyway, the response from SUK is a flat no not at the moment and probably not in the future for existing customers but they might do 3yrs free updates when buying a new Superb like they currently do on the FL Octavia but said that was just speculation on his part.

Their email is - [email protected]

If we create a standard email and everyone sends it - who knows ?

If Skoda Ireland can do it I don't see why Skoda UK can follow suite !

Dear Skoda,

I bought a car with Sat Nav because my wife is astonishingly inept at reading maps and on more than one occasion we've come close to divorce over which lane I need to be in approaching a roundabout. I'm not kidding when I say that she's previously struggled to navigate out of a supermarket carpark and was only able to get home with directions from my 4 year old! My wife has many great qualities but navigation is absolutely not one of them. Sadly, now with my car having an older set of maps, the navigational bliss we've enjoyed so long is being eroded by new roads and junctions which don't appear on the screen.

Please for the sake of my marriage, for the sake of my kids' future Christmases in a harmonious family give us a map update like they do in Ireland - where clearly, Skoda care about families.

Many thanks

.......

Brilliant ..!

I love it - we SHOULD send that one   - if they can't have a laugh and soften their position, then there's no justice

Pass this one around the entire forum might turn a few heads at Skoda UK then

Might it not be best to see EXACTLY whats on offer over here before sending emails?  I've not heard back from the local dealer yet but will post here when I know for sure what they are going to do.

Good point

I thought I saw somewhere it was just an ROI map update to the latest version......?

Seen as the discussion is around something that Skoda offer in Ireland and seemingly not in the UK - by any chance do you guys get a rewards card (loyalty card) from Skoda UK when you purchase a new car?  I think I've mentioned it a few months back somewhere else but basically every time you get a service at a Skoda main dealer you earn points (up to 500 max) just like you would at a supermarket.  There are various deals on servicing and other accessories and you can redeem the points against the purchase of a new car as I got €500 off my last car so its not a gimmick.

Worth mentioning that one to Skoda UK as well if they haven't it in place already!

I found this on the Skoda UK site -

"Free Sat Nav updates

If you currently own a new ŠKODA Octavia model (launched March 2013) you are entitled to three years' of free Sat Nav updates. For more information about how to download these updates, please click here."

What have Superb owners done ?

I would think (and I could be wrong) that all such software updates etc would be under the umbrella of the VAG group and they'd determine who gets what (Skoda Seat Audi VW) ...

I did speak to Skoda Ireland and they informed me that the free update offer related to ECU software etc and NOT maps ... Apologies for only posting this now but Ive been very busy at work ..

Cheers,

Rob

I think we know what Skoda UK is offering following my conversation with them. They were offering 3 years mapping updates on a Octavia, not sure if that is still on.

I have mixed feeling about their position on this issue. Firstly they are a business and like all businessis they are there to make money. Secondly, VAG  have stated that their plans are to become THE leading car manufacturer, consequently they have given Skoda higher targets to achieve. What better way to entice people to purchase and to remain loyal to the brand then a few give a ways. I find it hard to believe that the licensing for the software updates can be so prohibitively expensive that they cannot offer it as a free upgrade.

Excellent

Lady rung from Skoda today following my email asking if software update would be offered in UK She asked me if I knew what the software was ? I replied no , could you ring Skoda Ireland and find out, she said hold the line , she came back and said " no software will be offered in the UK " She couldn't or wouldn't tell me what the updates were, all very strange.

OK here's the real story, I called in to the local Skoda today and the cailin deas  in the service department asked to see the email from Skoda Ireland and then punched my reg number into the system. No software updates available for my car BUT I can have a set of new badges! What about a map update? Sorry Skoda do not have ANY maps available for the Columbus at the moment.

A new set of badges, that's a bit Irish isn't it?  I'm going to give it a go and see what they have to say, my Superb hasn't seen a Skoda garage in over 3 years (as the warranty in Ireland is only 2 years).  I'll keep you all posted.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just had a call from Skoda - the free three years of updates on the new Octy is due to a new system being installed - 2 SD cards in the glovebox ?

No offer of any update to my 2013 Columbus system - just advised that the yearly updates go out in April, so to wait till at least July - "to make sure you get the latest version"

I signed up for this and got a reply saying my 2011 car didn't need any updates - the current map is missing the M7 toll road (Limerick to Dublin) among other things, which means that I spend probably half an hour driving through a nearly blank map on trips to Dublin. According to wikipedia that road opened completely in 2010, though that seems a lot more recent than I thought. If correct, an early 2011 car could easily be missing sections of the road.

That there are no map updates to fix this sounds a bit unlikely to me though. I had arranged get it updated this week at the garage I got the car from before seeing this thread anyway. More importantly I need to get the dipped lights to point a bit more forwards - the incandescent bulbs on the Octavia I had before were much better on dipped beams and passed the NCT every time.

My last 2011 model was missing the M7 and most of the M9 and several other roads as well.  I tried a few updates and no joy.  I gave up after each update from the dealer seemed to be more out of date than the last.  That issue may be sorted now however.  See Rob's post above - the updates don't relate to maps (misleading from Skoda I know when they mention software updates!)  I'd get to your dealer and ask them directly.

On the lights issue, there is an adjustment AFAIK and I think Skoda realised that they weren't as focused as they should be.  My 2014 FL model has much better xenons compared to previous and the beam is fantastic so they have obviously tried to correct this.

At the moment Skoda Ireland do not have ANY updates for Columbus as "nothing is available from Skoda" but my my 2010  has all the M7, M8 ,M9 showing on my maps and now Rob has it as well.

I was disappointed with the dipped lights which were a lot better on my 06 Superb xenons running 7 year old bulbs, We had a look at them with the beamsetter and they showed up as being OKish, however we brought them up a bit and they are still well within the legal limit and I have never been flashed, might even bring them up another bit..It made a huge improvement to the dipped beam.  Its a two minute job so don't pay over the odds.  AFAIK the light units are the same on the FL cars.

Maybe mine were worse than I thought before but there is a lot more definition on the beams now, especially on full beam - an almost perfect elliptical shape - that's the best way I can describe it.  The light units themselves are the pretty much the same though.
