what suspension for

Featured Replies

going to be doing some more work on the front end of my 07 vrs estate in the next few weeks (when I get the last wheel nut to budge!) as its all feeling a bit tired now.

Plan is to do the following:

New top mounts

Front discs and pads (purchased)

Inner Steering Joints.

Track rod ends.

Suspension (TBC what though)

some poly bushing on the wishbones.

As I said its a 2007 TDI vrs estate so if anyone has any pointers / experience its all much appreciated.

and Yes I Have Searched

Your not going to get much for £300, better to stick with what you have and save up some more. For £300 you could end up with worse than you currently have.

i dont wanna go crazy low, just a little bit.

I keep seing coilovers on the bay for £200 - £300 but they look cheap so i guess AVOID at all costs.

what should I be prepared to spend? i could maybe do £600 including top mounts and the steering joints.

Just fitted FK ak street Coilovers and they seem pretty good tbh and £190 from dpm I'm not complaining

You got any pics SNH?

I was thinking coilovers may be a bit much and they carode quickly, but..... could maybe plastidip them once set up to prolong the life maybe?

I use the car daily (90+ miles) so it can't be to harsh.

Mine is pretty low tbh but the joy of Coilovers is you can adjust to what suits you.

These aren't crashy or overly bouncy bring so low and imagine they'd be even comfier at a sensible height ;)

What are you seeking to improve?  Handling, appearance or comfort?  How many miles has your car done?  What kind of roads do you normally drive on?  How do you drive?

I have a 2.0 litre 4x4 diesel Ocatvia estate and I want comfort and handling - I'm happy with the appearance.

My prioriities are

(1) the best tyres I can get at a reasonable price.  Keeping to 15" wheels which take a cheap size of tyre means I can get excellent tyres at a cheap price.  Bigger wheels do nothing whatever for the handling and spoil the comfort.  My Continental TS180 winter tyres are brilliant and not expensive in 195'65 R15 size.

(2) replacing worn suspension bushes with new but standard items.  My car has doem 100,000 miiles and the suspension clunks and bangs on potholes - bushes wear out and mine are clearly knackered.

(3) replacing the front (and possibly the rear, if necessary) dampers.  Dampers also wear out and pushing down on the corners of the car show that one front damper is very slightly softer than the other so they need replacing.  I shall fit Bilstein "OEM" ones which are better quality than the originals, very slightly stiffer (and therfore more comfortable) than the originals and even slightly cheaper!  I hope this will stop the front end of the car from slightly "floating about" on less than perfectly flat roads.

(4) When I need some summer tyres, buying some Dunlop Bluemotion summer tyres, on new alloy wheels (4 wheels + tyres = £400 in my size).  This will give me comfort, slience, good wet braking and fuel economy.

This won't make my car a sports car, but I don't want it to - I've got a sports car for when I want to fling a car around and corner on the door-handles.  But (for a modest expenditure) it will give me a quiet, comfortable, economical, safe and sure-footed workhorse which will be a pleasure to drive.and (for passengers) to travel long distances in - whatever the weather and whatever the surface I'm driving on.

But your preferences / requirements / ambitions may be quite different!

I'd like to improve handling and appearance,I do like to drive it hard, cars done 127,000 so same boat as you really, I mainly drive on A roads and dual carriagways.

Mines on 18" so costly no matter what I do :wall:

Same again, but maybe from other cars, uprated TT etc.

I'm open to sudgestions, the best value option for me, I dont want it "Stanced" or "in the weeds" but a bit of a drop would be nice. Again, same symtoms as yourself.

A Toy / Kit Car for the weekends is on the horizon, but not for another 18 months or so.

All in all not much different from what your saying, just want a better look, a better planted feel, and to keep the arse end in check a bit more.
