1.9 Tdi Fuel Economy Drop

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have had my octavia 1.9 tdi for a couple of months and it has made my commute a real easy drive.  The economy has been great, but yesterday I notice that there had been a drop in fuel economy of around 4mpg on one of my commuting trips.  The journey is over an hour, so its not due to small changes.  Could there be a problem with it?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Uly

It could be down to the warmer air. Cold air is denser so you get more air in and better economy when it's cold.

Yes, temperature has gone up, so less cooling effect and the air con saps it

aye warm air and the supply of winter diesel is still kicking around

I've noticed exactly the same thing recently, so I'm glad it's not just me! My car normally returns 55mpg but it's recently been down to around 51 mpg. You can always rely upon the good folk of Briskoda to provide an explanation. Thanks lads.

Ive noticed the opposite. went up from 54 to 58 mpg!

There's always one! ;-)

Maybe worth having a look at the fuel filter im usually around the 60 mark but dropped right down to 51 last week new filter and last two days its been back up around 60.

I have never noticed a diesel being more economical in the winter. I have been driving them for 14 years.  I have always found in the winter they take so long to warm up (my 2.0TDi Octavia takes ages in the cold weather and is bearly at 90 deg C in 7 mile journey) that the car is drinking more fuel when cold as car is not warming up as quick, add into that headlights on, wipers on, heater on, heated seats on.

Some of us will now be using summer diesel which is better.

some will still have the antifreeze diesel which isnt quite as good, and the upturn temp will kill mpg a bit.

so there will be folk noticing different things.

mine has a needle that goes to right when i fill up, i then use the car and when its nearly all the way left i fill up again. Mpg? I dunno

.

A perfectly sensible attitude.

However what amuses me are owners who (like me) are sufficiently interested in their fuel consumption to want to discuss it and post about it in a forum like this, but who couldn't be bothered to actually measure it and merely quote meaningless things like "miles per tankful" - whatever a "tankful" is; no-one agrees about that!

Aye i know when i first buy a car as i calculate it.

but after i leave it. It will become obvious when its getting thirsty.
