iPhone 4 to Sony Xperia Z1 or Z1Compact

Featured Replies

My ageing iPhone 4 is beginning to slow to the point that it's bugging me. Money is a bit on the tight side just now so I was thinking about one of the Sony's. They seem to be excellent phones, very powerful and huge 20mp camera. Added bonus they are waterproof too (good idea with a small person around). What worries me is the move from Apple to Android, I currently have my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook and they all talk to one another effortlessly. My worry is I'd upset this trend by moving my phone away from Apple.

Has anyone here made the switch from Apple to Android, how smoothly did it go and do you regret it or not. Does android sync with iCloud for calendar and contacts etc?

Any experiences welcome ????

There is no sync at all between android and icloud for anything.  iPhone 4 is dated as you say, if funds are short consider a secondhand iPhone 4S or the 5C, there are some good offers on the 5C right now. If you go the android route, you'll need to use an alternative cloud source such as google.

Ah, now that's a big drawback, I really like the fact that I put info into my phone and it updates on the iPad and Macbook. I wonder, I could just use the iCloud website for diary entries etc but it would be a pain having to update 2 lots of contact lists.

Have you looked for a good deal on current iPhones from network operators and supermarkets???

As you already have the iPad and MacBook, it's a shame to exclude your new phone from the Apple equation.

You can get an iPhone 5s from FREE depending which model you're after, and I would advise going for the biggest your budget will stretch to. The monthly amount depends on which network and talk plan you opt for.

Whatever you do, DON'T get a payday loan

Maybe your brothers, sisters or your parents might be able to help you out financially??

It's worth asking ;)

Good hunting.

Nah, I'm a big boy now :) with my own wee one running around. I have to get the priorities straight. At the end of the day a new phone would be nice but the old one does still work. It may just be a simple case of doing what they used to do in the olden days and save up for things :P

Still in the consideration stages, my current contract expires is May and was thinking of going sim only with GiffGaff as the other half is with them and thinks they are great.

I am really biased towards Apple and to be honest if money was no object I probably wouldn't even consider a switch but in the current climate we all have to make sacrifices to make ends meet.

Just interested in others points of view

I can't say for definite as i didn't come from an iPhone but doesn't Xperia Transfer handle all that?

I've had the Z1 compact for just over a month and loving it

It's maybe not quite such a big drawback as you think.

What mannyo alluded to but didn't say, was that if you do go down the Google route then it is possible to get ALL your Apple devices to sync the Google calendar and contacts back across to them. In fact it will auto update both ways so anything on your Apple stuff will sync back to your (main) Google account. Now, I don't know if this includes iCloud but why have two lots of things floating in the Cloud anyway?

The two names of the 'syncing' processes escape me at the moment but they are a common standard that, believe it or not, are supposed to make everything easier to move data around.

Obviously you will need to move all your data across to Google to start it off but I'll leave that to someone else to help with if possible.

I wish Apple did a bigger phone, similar size to the Samung Note models. I don't want to leave iOS but do need something with a bigger screen.

+1 for the Sony Xperia Z Compact. Just got one this week and it's a nice piece of kit, but I upgraded from an Xperia S, so not had to contend with any iOS to Android issues (though transferring calendar entries is a pain and not covered with the transfer app - can't for the life of me work out why it's not possible, but at least there's a work around!)

The new Xperia transfer app does include an iPhone in it's list of phones to transfer from.

If you're heavily bought into the Apple ecosystem you'll probably find life easier if you stick with their products.

That's part of the strategy with the big companies.

Much as I'd love to leave apple and move away to the variety offered by Android, the need to have all products talk to one another is greater than the desire to leave. After all I do really like Apple stuff and they do "just work". So with that in mind I've trawled ebay for the last month and managed to find a brand new iPhone 5C 32gb with a substantial discount of retail. So I'm now happy again as my new phone flys compared to the old 4.

The bonus is, it's not tied to any contract so I can chop and change to find the network and talk plan that suits the best.

Thanks for all the input you've given. There is no getting away from the fact that the Sony is a cracking phone, and I may still get one for the other half at some point but the inability to sync with my other Apple kit really was the deal breaker

Not long to wait now Harry.    :sun:

Linky   ;)

Just migrate all your data to Google equivalents (Google calendar etc) and then sync to the phone. I have a mate who was a big iPhone fan but switched to Samsung, he still uses mac book air but all his services are with Google
