M3 vs Monte

Featured Replies

A friend is coming over tomorrow.  With his M3.  Apparently we're going for a spin (hopefully not literally).  Last of his cars I drove was his 535d remapped to something silly, so a quick spurt in the 414bhp (?) V8 should be good.

The only problem is I haven't driven the Monte all week - I've had a few longer drives in Mrs PDIBK's Golf instead (company miles).  So I'm keen to have a spin in the Monte too.

Is anyone interested in a back to back comparison?  Maybe from both drivers' perspectives?

That will be lovely.

But while we wait to get your comparison,

can we maybe get an opinion from the resident BMW Expert,

Will the BMW be a better car than the Skoda?

At 70 mph which is the fastest?

If one gets to 70 mph in half the time, what to do in the 5 seconds quicker you are behind the car in front.

Which costs more, and which is more economic to drive & own?

How is the depreciation or does it not mater if you get the BMW on a PCP?

I'm just checking whether my diesel lump has more torque than the M3... :giggle:

I'll hazard a guess the M3 is nicer to drive, better balanced, nicer to be in.  The Monte is cheaper to buy, cheaper to run.

M3 might be a bit quicker too. :) Unless you are in traffic in which case there might not be much in it.

In a word - no

is it the new lovely 4-door M3? I was inside that beauty during the recent Geneva show. The only car that makes sense to upgrade to for me at the moment. Not financially though so it will have to wait probably a lot!

They are 6 cylinder with 425bhp, (or 431ps depending who you read)

so cant be one of those that is visiting.

That's right, didn't pay attention to the specs, not interested then...  :p

Not really,

other than the food & drink at the Dealer Reveal Days, they are all much alike.    (joking)

I thought p0rn photos were not allowed in this forum...

Sometimes i get to clean the tyres, if i am lucky.

(Cameras were banned that day, but then the cars that were 'Secret' & revealed indoors

had already left on Unmarked Covered Transporters,  as had Security.)

Please take him like a king (may need remap first).

M3 will monster any skoda in any situation (excluding mpg) I'm a x m3 owner trust me !

Really? Don't tell... We were all by the assumption M3s are rubish but thankfully someone came to set things straight! Hilarious...

ANY is a very strong word to be banding around a forum full of pedants

Get a hire car for the day and take him on in that. There's NOTHING faster than a hire car....... ;-)

Sooooo. I haven't driven the Monte yet, but I did blast the M3.

It's a 4 door E96 (? Not the latest one, the last one). 4.0 V8, 414bhp, leather, 6spd and a bunch of other good stuff.

Driving the Monte now doesn't seem fair...

I drove the Golf just now, when you mash the throttle, nothing happens. In the M, my face felt funny...also the horizon kept zooming to us.

The BM was silly quick, in any gear, from any speed. It also does pootlin along at 30 a very nice place to be. Thing is, pootlin along at 80+ felt distinctly similar! Licence stand by!

The ride was composed, even over some pretty terrible local roads, the brakes awesome and the engine just pulls. Oh and then there's the noise. It's not an intrusive one, unles you are really opening the taps, then the rumble reaches you and later, a bit of a scream. Nice.

Apparently, before he got it it was a 2 lady owner car. Not casting dispersions, but you could see someone buying it, never needing to change out of 3rd and NEVER using more than quarter throttle. Bonkers.

So, supple ride (but firm), comfortable, crazy rapid and brilliant sound track. Oh and the boot then got loaded with a pushchair, travel cot, three kiddy bags of generic kiddy stuff and other gubbins. The back seat was furnished with softest cow hide and the hidden by 2 kiddy seats. The front was electric operated leather seats of awesomeness.

In short, I won't bother with the Monte comparison - it's a great car, but it's worth 5 times less or so. It's the same colour, the seats are ok (but my arms get sooooo tired moving them...) and I can't reel in the scenery like that. The ride is firm enough, but runs out of suppleness and compliance, like it runs out of travel. And the noise is pretty dull.

Oh well. But then I do average 50mpg+, it does cost considerably less to buy and until a few years time (when I might have something similar, just because) the thirty mile or so, twenty minute blast will just be a nice fix. Like when you go to the go kart track and need to re calibrate on the drive home, or worse, when you've been hitting the XBox...

I get what the journos mean - the M3 is a competent all rounder, all the car anyone would ever need all the time (not just some times). Perhaps if they did it as an estate...and with a black roof...maybe call it a CSL Touring...

E90 M3's are nice and sound lovely, however I would not have one over our 135i

Which, let's be honest is exactly what you'd expect.

Skoda are a lower range/budget brand of the VW empire and are not allowed to make cars that challenge Audi sports models and the huge profits they generate.

Where as the M3 is a "halo product" for the rest of the 3 series range and are designed to be a flipping quick drivers car.

So a driver focused M3 coming in at £56,000 plus options being better than a Skoda isn't a great susprise.

I don't think there are hardly any Skodas on the market (even right at the top end) that come to much more than half the cost of the M3.

Blimey, if it's all about willy waving someone will pull up a Ferrari at £170,000 next and say the Skoda or M3 aren't as good as that either. :giggle:

What a shocker!

Amusingly I have overtaken an M3 and M5 at Brands Hatch in my Yeti though.

Im not willy waving buddy , he was comparing an m3 to skoda not a m3 to a ferrari! and i would love to see the footage of the yeti overtaking some M cars ether your lewis hamilton or they were broken down or on a cool down lap ! a yeti is hardly a pedigree track car !

Its nice to see the op impressed by the m3 they are truly great cars and they can be brought for buttons these day's £20,000 buys you a good example

That's Mr Hamilton to you.

Just for fun...  never under estimate a Yeti. :giggle:

I was there with a couple of mates from the GTROC, one offered to run as a camera car for a few laps.
