Hmm, different oils have been used

Featured Replies

well to be honest ive had the car just over 2 years now, at first it bothered me a hell of a lot but these things can take over and become too much, now after that final test ive just shrugged my shoulders and said to hell with it (used other words but they'll only get censored here :) ) and think its time to move on

Skoda arent bothered, the dealer isnt bothered and, at most, ill sell the thing in a year anyways so its their loss i wont buy another VW car for as long as i remember about it

cheesed off doesnt quite cut it but hey ho theres more to life and its just an expensive piece of metal

i just need to acquire some oil to tide me through and remember to check the bloody thing every few 100 miles

so i guess in answer to my original question, any VW 502 will do :)

Sorry to hear your low feelings.

Its a shame that we CUSTOMERS never got our pressure group act together, both UK and Global. (It may only be 20% level now but post Warranty level will raise this number in my view.

George has tried to get some momentum going but we have sadly NOT supported his efforts enough, to bring VAG to account.

It is rumoured that others did in the early days and may have been paid off ,legally told to keep quite in the process !! I do stress this is Rumoured!

I have no facts ,I only wish I had and could use.

Bought some magnatec from Wilkinson, £7 so not too bad. They had their own brand vw 502 00 for £20 for 5 ltrs but it said it was 5w40 so what's more important the 502 00 or the 5w40 ?? Not being tight but if I'm using 7-8-9 ltrs between services I'm not wasting more money than needed

If it has in 5w 30 best to keep topping up with that,

and if 5w 40 with that,

with an oil burner, makes no difference.

VW-502 is for Fixed Servicing and VW-504 for Variable Servicing.

I use 5w 30 again now with good oil,

and have used 5w 40 before, and no difference in the oil temps etc.

I have collected a car from Servicing at Skoda and dropped that oil right away as soon as back home,

and put in good stuff,

i have seen oil put on by Skoda that had the engine running at 95 degrees,

where 2 hours before or for days before it was happy at 91-92 degrees.

Obviously they only use Quaility Oil, well you would think they do.!

cheers George, i just assumed 502 00 would be one standard but like everything in this world their out to confuse me

i dont mind paying the £7 against the £12 for the shell stuff and see how it goes but if it gets too bad/costly then wilko's own 5w40 will be going in

The first nber 5 relates to its viscosity at low temps, cold mornings ect, I would prefere 40 , as that relates to how it holds up T high temps, and the vRS creates high temps.... Our work oil is 5-40

The lower the first number (e.g. 5) the thinner the oil will be on start-up

The higher the second number (e.g. 30) the thicker the oil will be during normal running.

Wouldn't 0W-40 therefore make more sense than 5W-30 (assuming both are VW 502 00 of course)?

Both grades are available as Castrol EDGE from Opie Oils at £42 for four litres or £56 for four + one litres.

No,

If you want to keep Warranties Valid use the recommended oils & other fluids.

Quite, Castrol themselves recommend EDGE 5W-30.

However, I would be interested to read a scientific / engineering explanation as to why 5W-30 is more appropriate than 0W-40

http://kewengineering.co.uk/Auto_oils/oil_viscosity_explained.htm

UK/EU Conditions, Ambient Temps, Cold Starting and possible max Temps in hot weather.

Volkswagen Audi Group engine designers  and engineers did a judgement on the required oil for efficient running.

I would hope that judgement was made with some scientific reasoning & experience behind it,

Input from Castrol & the likes.

There is a Briskoda thread somewhere with 'Jabozuma' s Oil analysis results/charts,

he paid a Test Centre to carry it out for him.

This is the VW Owners Manual for the Polo, reads different from the Fabia one.

With the Skoda VAG Oil Chart, take care, there are errors saying 3.6 litre on an engine requiring 3.9 litres.

Quite, Castrol themselves recommend EDGE 5W-30.

Hi again vxh26,

Have you made up your mind yet, relating to ordering the vRS , or are you backing a way now?

Interested to hear your conclusion

BUMP,

So that vxh26 can maybe comment on the latest he has read on Oils,

and maybe give some advice on Oils for the Twinchargers.
