Why do insurance companies pass on your details...

Featured Replies

I don't understand the benefit that insurance companies get by passing on details of customers to companies who look to get you "compensation" for being in an accident?

Surely all this gets dealt with at the time? I've also always asked my insurance companies not to share my information with any companies unless checked with me first.

I am constantly getting phone calls recently about the accident I was involved in last year, which is all dealt with - settled - end of story.

Yet I can now get up to 3 calls or more a day offering for someone to make a claim on my behalf.

A company just called now and I stupidly answered, practically begging for me to help them build a case and get me compensation - it's madness.

Now my accident wasn't serious, nor was anyone even slightly injured, but they say I can claim if I was shocked or upset by it... I said I wasn't, they kept telling me it's okay if I am and can claim. They wouldn't take no for answer, then continued to tell me I could claim £2,000. I told them its pocket money and not worth the hassle and was swiftly hung up on.

Why do these companies think it's okay to drag up the past and the accident without anyone approaching them - it drives me mad, had the accident been significant I might have been distraught that they had brought it all back to me. Rant over.

Completely agree. To my knowledge insurance companies are always saying they have to charge more because ambulance chasers push up their costs. But surely this is because other insurance companies are selling your details to these people so they can then go and sue other insurance companies! It's madness!

I had an Indian sounding guy call me up and literally try and tell me how 'upset, shook and shaken' i was about the accident id had a few months before. Tried to then pass me on to their manager who also tried to tell me how I was fully entitled to money!

No thank, put the phone down.

Good to know, it wasn't a particular dig at anyone in particular just a daily gripe :(

I keep getting similar calls but for an accident I haven't had.

Same here, and texts on a Sunday evening even!! :@

They don't tend to ring me again after i've <cough>  'spoken' to them.

I might be wrong here, the way it was explained to me is that when you are involved in an accident a sum of money is put aside as part of the claim to cover personal injuries that you may or may not have. There is a time limit in which you can make that claim, I think it's 3-years during which these parasites can see that this money is available for you to claim.

That is why you get bombarded with offers of "free" help to make your claim that usually increases as the 3-year period is nearing its end as they can see their potential commission slipping away.

I drives me mad and I think that something should be done to stop these and PPI chasers (that's another can of worms) from making peoples lives a misery with unsolicited phone calls, e-mails and text messages.

It's not just some insurance companies that pass this information on but the Police and I've been told Recovery Companies as well, they all get a nice little earner and you get 3-years of purgatory, doesn't seem fair does it!

Maybe they know something you don't :o :O

Some do it as they get a referral fee

"No, it's his brother, he died in that crash, we're burying him today, do you think you're ****ing funny or something?" Works well at stopping them.

They hassle you so much because for that 'wonderful' £2000 payout you get they actually received closer to £10000.

That's according to the insurance company that my old company used.

Follow the money.

Claims companies buy accident details from insurers and possibly even the police. I think that's maybe not legal anymore I'm not sure if the legislation went through.

I was hit by a lorry in 2010, car needed a door resprayed and a wing mirror lens nothing more. I fielded calls for about 2yrs where they called and usually said "we understand you were injured in an accident".

Leeches!
