Does anyone know what eco mode actually does?

 

It says it puts the engine and aircon in eco mode - but what does this mean?

 

I've been wondering, since there doesn't seem to be much difference mpg wise between eco and normal - I've tried both on a couple of identical routes with no apparent saving in eco mode.

 

Any ideas?

There are few discussions on this but if you have a manual it only changes how responsive the throttle is but I believe if you have a DSG 'box it also changes how it behaves when off the throttle.

I've tried it with mine and when you're going down hill the Maxidot, comes up with Coasting and the engine revs drop to minimal, otherwise & at other times the air con fan speed seems to drop away, the noise generator seems to be toned down considerably.

 

The Stop-Start thing kicks in a bit more readily and the gearbox changes a tad sooner.

Does the air con not go to Eco mode too to lower power usage

On a manual car the only noticeable benefit of Eco mode is that the sound generator is turned down, making the drone less irritating at motorway speeds. If it makes any difference to fuel economy it is so small as to be unnoticeable.

 

My car sits in normal mode most of the time but I do select eco if I have a long 70-80mph cruise approaching.

In my car I have a button for selecting driving mode, and there I can choose INDIVIDUAL, If I do that and adjust engine to ECO-mode IT DOES NOT COAST!!

 

Found this by luck, but very nice since I hate the COASTING feature in ECO-mode

Eco mode must be short for 'I want to die horribly in a road crash'.

 

In a DSG it either doesn't re-engage gear after coasting meaning you need to brake before accelerating or it turns the engine off while coasting meaning you have to stop, go into P then restart the engine....   Imagine having to do that after coasting down a motorway decline...

 

Oh, and economy wise I haven't noticed any difference whatsoever between Eco and Normal.

 

Why VAG need these gimmicks, why not a single mode that adapts to your driving style at the time and gives the best the car can.

Why don't you get rid of your car?

You obviously hate the engine and gearbox that it has, either that or trade it in and get a petrol model or change marque's, all you do & have done is bitch about it.

I and many others are very happy with our cars & the way they & the gearbox performs.

I've only just started to make use the eco function on the car and to be quite honest I don't find too much difference between it and normal driving modes, other than the coasting function on gentle downhill grades, I don't have any really steep hills where the grade is greater than 1:7 or 1:8 to try it on.

It might be valid for diesel engined cars, but it's completely different to petrol engined one's, I've not had any problems with the eco mode or stop/start in eco mode, it works flawlessly.

I have found eco mode to be useful in crawling 1st / 2nd gear traffic jams. The reduced throttle response smooths out the constant accelerate, brake, accelerate brake driving characteristics of this type of driving. That is unless you are the type of driver who never wants to be more than a foot away from the car in front.

I think its very nearly an accepted fact that the DSG and diesel don't work as well together as the petrol versions and the Eco Mode seems to highlight even more of the difference in refinement.

If you'd bothered to check my previous posts as you claim you have, I rate the DSG with petrol engine highly.

 

The only reason I went for a DSG was having spent a week with a 2.0TFSI DSG Passat CC.  Loved it.

 

Hate the Diesel + DSG combination though... it has flaws... and multiple people agree.

 

Maybe all those with bad experiences should just shut up and not pass them on or perhaps they should so others are better informed.

 

I ordered my Octy (Which I love everything about it except the gearbox) when they'd only been released in the UK a week previously and Skoda UK didn't have any DSG diesel demonstrators for another 2 months.  Going off my previous experience with the gearbox I went for it.  Wish I hadn't but I've got it until 2016 when I am currently pining for either a VRS petrol DSG or a Golf GTI with performance pack.

I've been driving my 1.4 tsi in eco mode mostly for the past week. It suits my driving style around town. It's nice and smooth. I tried sport mode today and got to the end of my street almost before my brain realised I'd set off. Sport certainly isn't suitable for town commuting.

At 4.30 in the morning when I leave for work it scares the crap outta foxes too, lotta fun on an empty road though.  Is that a manual you got Andy or the DSG ?

Mines a manual. I can't wait to give it a blast on a nice trip to skeggy soon.

just for balance I love my diesel DSG.  Obviously ECO is broken with the coasting not working properly but I think this is a software error that Skoda may one day decide to fix or just carry on placing their hands over their ears and pretending it doesnt exist.

 

Love the other modes, even sport + S on twisty A roads.

No point in engaging Sport mode here in Surrey, too many creep artists around for you to be able to use it and have any fun and OMG don't they get 5h177y if you go past the doing 32 mph in a 30 (not near a school) & 35 mph in 40 mph or more areas, plod gets tetchy if you use it on A3.
