aftermarket glass sunroof

Featured Replies

HI FOLKS,  i want to fit a slide/tilt sunroof in my fabia2, has anyone had one fitted, or got any advice. thanks. BANKSY.

My advise would be take your time and find a well reputed fitter, who has preferably worked on this model to boot!

I too have thought about this but have yet to jump in at the deep end. Back in the eighties, every town had their own aftermarket sunroof fitter but the big dilemma was that they start to leak or the mechanism cocks up, resulting in either a repair or even a replacement. (Even proper factory sunroofs have this happen). Usually, the cheap end result is to seal the sunroof back up with silicone sealant… End result, a non opening glass roof!

In addition to this, your insurance company may well charge you more for your policy as the vehicle will now be modified… Although if Skoda fitted it from new, this would make no difference, strangely!

Have you asked your dealer if they get them fitted as a dealer option or if they only order direct from the manufacturer? Some options go in AFTER build, some during! I would guess though, this option is during as it was quite a reasonably priced extra, and was electric, if memory serves me right.

They would also be covered by the warranty, unlike a re-fit, which may even void any you have left.

I would never retrofit one - ever! I've heard too many horror stories.

You either get it from the start or you don't. That is my humble opinion.

Sooooo, you want to cut a hole in the (load bearing) roof.  And put in (not load bearing) glass.

I would trust the manufacturer to di it, because it's their car design, but a local chop shop??

Could you imagine cutting the hole far to big and then having to tell the customer

A big no no from me

Can you imagine

Good news, bad news

Good news sir, you will now be able to enjoy a view of the sky and the wind in your hair.

Errm bad news...................................here is your brand new convertible

OT,

i have seen some DS3 sporty type Citroens recently,

Someone seems to have cut the hole in the roof too big and patched it up with some material left over from a A4 Cabrio.

It may well de-value the car,....that is the case with certain 70s/80 classics with pop ups fitted.

Personally I ordered a factory electric roof with mine, one of the reasons being how cheap it was.Not essential in this air conditioned era,but still a nice thing to have.

PS I have a neighbour who had a new Fiat 500 with the long slide back roof...she sent it back after 6 months because the dealer could not fix the leaks...she now has one with a solid roof.

I dont think id trust anybody to do a good enough job tbh. Its a big no no from me too.

If i wanted one, id of specced one at purchase

If it wasn't there from factory forget it ! It will eventually fail and the interior will mist up due to leakage

No chance. As well as it not likely being as well sealed as a factory fit, I wouldn't want to risk the cut being through part of the roof designed for rollover protection. When it's designed in to the roof, that is taken into consideration. A bloke with a tin opener won't know or care.
