Heavy rear tyre wear on a 2WD?

Featured Replies

Got a 2WD 140 combi and at 17500 miles I'm going to change the front tyres because they're almost worn down to the indicator strips but I've now noticed the rears are not far behind with max 1-2mm tread more. I'm sure on every other car I've had the rears have lasted much longer than the fronts - is this right though?

My jetta use to do this too. The rear suspension is all fully adjustable and a bit of toe out will chew your tyres, just the same as the fronts.

The camber adjuster bolts seize into the bushes. Normally they say that the only way to sort it is new arms and lower mounts. That's crap power flex do bush kits for them - about £55.

Hope that helps

Sounds odd for front 2WD. Are they both worn evenly (the rears)?  Any issues before with suspension alignment as this may be a cause?

What brand of tyre? Continental by chance

Yeah, factory fit Continentals, not aware of and suspension issues but bought it used. I'll get all four changed and get the alignment etc checked

Perhaps the previous owner swapped the front tyres to the rear? 17,000 on Continentals on the front would be exceptional.

My Octy had excessive toe in on the rear wheels and was wearing the rear tyres quicker than the front. A full 4 wheel alignment sorted it.

I'm already seeing some wear with my Continentals front and rear- only 7,500kms.  Not good

I changed my front Conti's at 13k miles and the replacement Goodyears are going to do at least twice that on the front. The rear conti's are near the limit (now at 26k miles) and I will again put GoodYears on.

I must add that very rarely do I push the car but 99.9% of the time I drive with getting as many miles to the gallon as possible.

The GoodYears have very good road rolling resistance, noise dba figures and a similar price.

never even though if this......

Same as my Jetta! :)

Given the rate of wear on my contis, I think your fronts will be on the 2nd set and rears 1st set.

Can anyone confirm the starting tread depth of conti sport 2s?  Is it 7.7mm?

I just checked my Conti's PremiumContact 2e front and rear as I passed 30k this week.   Incredibly I have 5.4mm left on the front and 6mm on the rear   .  That suggests that they might last 70k miles :sun:  These are the first set of Conti's that I have ever got a truly high mileage out of.

Back on topic,   front/rear wear is surprisingly similar which backs up what the original poster ILOVEMYSUPERB says.

I'm sure someone in the mk3 Octavia forum recently posted 6.3mm
