Firewall

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Having just upgraded to the latest version of zone alarm (after much harrasment by update availably messages) ive found its over the top restrictive to the point where lots off stuff on normal wevbited doesnt work.

Its now been removed completey. Is windows XP SP2 firewall enough by itself or do I need something else? I am running spypot and avg antivirus etc.

Haven't upgraded ZA yet so can't comment. I hear the same of the SP2 Firewall though. I turned it off as soon as I set up my new laptop. Apparently it's pants anyway and may automatically grant access for microsoft endorsed programs without asking you.

Don't know about you but I would consider that to be an infringement of my privacy.

I wouldn't trust XP firewall TBH m8 :)

Zone alarm isnt really a firewall more of a program control. try kerio personal firewall as mentioned on here in the past. There is a free edition and its very good indeed!

I would second kerio. been using it for a while and is IMHO better than Zone Alarm.

FWIW You can have your hardwired XP firewall running together with a software program, so no reason why you can't have both running in parallel. Many people choose to have both.

Usual caveat of setting restore or goback point before installing any new software, registry back up etc, and only one software firewall at a time.

I run Netveda. Its very light on resources and very easy to set up.

I have heard of problems with the upgrade, however, last time it was upgraded there were similair problems I didn't have any. Did you upgrade or go for a new install?

As for kerio personal firewall isn't that the same type of firewall as zonealarm??

Again FWIW, I found Zone Alarm caused compatability problems, so use Sygate. Both are free and both offer state-of-the-art email newletters, which are worth the effort of reading IMO.

I used to use Sygate, but found it too heavy on the resources of my pc, ie slowing things down from time to time. Netveda is lots lighter and doesnt cause such problems (for me anyway).

All it takes is a little studying to get the best out of it, which isnt a bad thing.

Isn't Netveda specifically for networks though? Speaking from memory so could be talking through my hat.
