Feckin pothole pt2

Featured Replies

So I hit this pothole big bang, clanky clanky.

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/310821-arg-feckin-potholemaybe/

Spotted a broken spring last night and pulled out the top[ of the driver side front spring. Care no longer goes clanky clanky over every bump.

BUT....

Now at low speed I hear a rubbing type noise when manouvering at low speed i.e parking. Might be a little louder in reverse.

Trying to get the car in to get looked at now (local indy booked up so looking for someone else) but I always like to have an idea of the problem that it's in for. I hate putting the car in and having to go "just fix it".

Under the car last night broadly speaking everything looked in order. No obvious kinks or bends in anything, no fresh metal showing nothing hanging down or swinging loose. Car drives fine no knocks or shimmies.

Coud it just be the broken top of the spring moving around?

The car will make all sorts of funny noises with a bust spring and I WOULD NOT DRIVE IT FAR OR FAST! until you get it fixed, if the spring fails there is the potential for it to take your tyre with it!

Car going in on Tuesday anyway. Chap think the noise might just be the top bearing.

Looking at some pictures on line I think there is a bit of a spring mount not where it should be

Good call, will be minimising the driving until Tuesday.

Quite scary. If there had been no odd noises I'd have had no idea there was even a problem.

I'm collecting parts for mine at the moment, 127,000 miles and i think my o/s/f topmount is shot along with inner steering joints.

think I may go with the AK FK coilovers as they are cheaper than buying standard set up.

Starting to think now I'd better check that fkd spring isn't touching the wheel or tyre

piece of mind just to have a poke around and see.

The noise is probably the broken spring rotating / rubbing in the top mount as the missing 1/2 turn of the spring will allow the spring to rotate as you turn the wheels.

Really should be a non driver until the spring is replaced, certainly use as little as possible.

Had 2 break on my previous Mk1 Octy, they always seem break in the same place.

as above, as when you steer the top mount bearing rotates over the top of your coil spring, so now that a bit of the top of the spring is missing it will move slightly every time you steer hence the noise.

Yup had a good feel around and the spring is well away from the tyre.

Noise is 'orrible though. Driving delicately...

Any idea of cost on this yet? I want to put the willies up my missus (about hitting speed bumps and the like)

I'll put the willies up her for nowt if you like :bandit:

ECP has a spring for £88 I'll be getting OEM so I'll bet it's a bit more than that.

I guess the derv will have different springs but probably a similar price. I'm pretty good at avoiding potholes but that last one got me :wall:

why not go for eibach front and rears for £170 it will work out the same as two manufactures springs

ive never had an eibach spring break on me no has my mate whos a mechanic

it does lower it 20 mm but that's **** all really

Not that bothered about making the car better. Changing all round means 4x labour for doing it plus an alignment plus declaring a mod to the insurer just in case.

Prob only going to keep the car another 18 months at most.

backs don't take long at all

and its like light bulbs once one goes they all go

I see your point, but I wouldn't be telling the insurance about 20 mm drop

it was like that when I got here
