Broken front spring!

Featured Replies

Hi All

Been considering putting lowering springs on the VRS for some time.

Wife noticed a noise that started the other day but thought it was stuff in the boot moving about. I was in the car yesterday and noticed the noise but sounded like the front drivers side.

Checked it today and sure enough its a broken spring. Need to get it fixed asap. Not sure about doing it myself as I need to do it quickly as we go on holiday in the car the week after next.

Options from previous questions as far as I can tell:

1) Get a set of Eibach Pro Kit springs, use original shocks - lowers approx 15mmm to 20mm.

2) Get a set of PI or H+R springs, use original shocks - lowers approx 30mm.

3) Get a set of shocks/springs (Bilstein/Eibach B4???) - lowers approx 15mm to 20mm.

Questions:

1) Is this job easy enough to do myself? (did it on my astravan with Uncles help before but he is working and cant help this time). Is there a how to?

2) I like the idea of a 30mm drop. Is there a Bilstein setup that gives this?

3) What are the B numbers and part numbers for the correct setup for my car?

4) What kind of price am I looking at for the springs, Bilstein kits and labour charges?

5) Is it worth changing anything else at the time, strut mount bearings, drop links etc?

The car is a VRS CR mk2 FL with 50,000 miles on it.

Cheers

Dave

My H&R cup kit will be up for sale soon. Been on the car just over a month... I'm getting coilovers. Ride is good and also improved cornering. PM me if your interested. Drop of around 35mm.

From what I've been told it's worth changing the top mounts and bearings whilst it's all apart. Mind will be changed when the coilovers go on.

Any other advice folks. Its a bit of a minefield out there when trying to find the correct bits. Considering RARB too.

Don't forget a couple of FARB drop links, they seem prone to rusting and with nothing to grip the ball joint just turn in the cup necessitating a grinder to remove them.

Pattern parts ~£12 each.

I have some original VRS 2010 TDI springs if of any use??

Are these any good?

Bilstein will drop 15mm to 20mm I assume. Load rating is 1100kg.

koni will drop 30mm to 35mm I assume. Prefer that. Load rating is less , is that ok?

You can't have failed to notice the enthusiasm for an upgrade of the RARB. It will transform your vehicle.

Yes. I plan on getting a rarb too.

PI do a damper/spring kit for a 1.9 diesel which lowers approx 30mm.

I have emailed them for info on a mk2 2.0 cr.
