Things lying in the road.... :(

Featured Replies

So... minding my own following two other cars, I spot something flicked up but have no time to do anything but slow down a bit.

Turns out it was a huge chunk of metal... which has destroyed the plastic trims on my front bumper and put a gash in my air con condenser. Not to mention the tear in the bumper itself and various bits of plastic missing or destroyed.

Not a happy man.

Silver lining... at least it was the bottom of the bumper and not the top, bonnet or god forbid, windscreen. Would not have wanted to hit that!

ouch... any idea what it is...? This might lead to someone not having a secure load. I had this happen to me and got a load of bits replaced. The police had pulled a lorry over up the road for not having a secure load so they passed my details on and they paid for everything i needed to be fixed.

Looks like some sort of leading?

Thank god it was the front bumper buddy!!!

Windscreen would not have taken kindly to that. glad your ok!

Ouch. Looks like it was unsecured metal scrap from a lorry.

I hate that feeling when you see some debris and can't do anything about it in time, I'm really careful with my felicia because the sump is very low, I wouldn't care less if the bumper got totalled but I would cry my eyes out if it smashed the sump.

Rest of the engine is fine... so not the end of the world.

Didn't see anyone pulled over, no one to report it to or anything like that. Shame really... might just have to live without aircon for a bit... £400+ to replace the condenser is what I've been quoted... massive pain.

I can source a bumper and get that sorted... but it's not what I want with Combe just around the corner and an MOT on monday.

There are a number of Octavia MK1s being broken for parts on here, you should be able to pickup all the parts you need second hand (including the condenser)

I intend to find all the parts second hand... no way I'm paying the money they were after.

Just want to make sure I get a decent bumper. In silver.

Would have been cheaper if it was the windscreen.  :giggle:

Quite likely, it would seem.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone, now time to get the car sorted and back to health ASAP.

I don't want to be the one with gaffer tape holding stuff together at Combe.

I remember seeing a stone fly up and hit my windscreen... I was like a stunned rabbit, I could have swerved to miss it if I'd thought about it

Would have been cheaper if it was the windscreen.  :giggle:

..................but hardcorhobbit might not have been here to start the tread if it was the windscreen. Glad you were not hurt

Good call buddy. I know we all love our cars and spend way too much money on them but its more important no one was hurt or god forbid even worse. The damage sucks but at least your OK.

F*%k me, good job it wasn't through the screen mate. Does look like leading probably find a church down the road minus a roof !! glad your OK, sure you'll source the parts on here there's enough breakers.

Thanks mate.

I'll be looking for breakers soon, but I'm down to speak to Clive at CNtuning this week, we may be able to source some bits and pieces.

Thats a huge lump of metal.

Hope you sort it quickly.

Jason's breaking a vrs, he may still have the condensor.

I have variously had vehicles I have been driving hit by:

a. A lump of concrete which made a hole through the windscreen of a van, only the fact it hit the edge and the A pillar stopped it was the reason it didn't come through.

b. a blackbird hit the centre of the windscreen on the motorway with what could only be described as a splash.  Instant two tone car.

c.  Collected a piece of metal which made a hole in the underseal on the sill, killed a tyre and embedded itself through the rear mudflap.

d. Hit a brown paper sack big enough to fit a person in.  I had to make a split second decision and went for, hit it straight on, turned out to be full of polystyrene chunks - it just exploded.  I had to pull over onto the hard shoulder until my hands stopped shaking.

So it could have been worse.

Indeed it could, your stories are a reminder of that. I was lucky in the end, but I'm not taking it for granted. Need to get the car up in the air and look for any further damage.

Also, I'll speak to Jason later in the week if Clive doesn't come through for me. :)

I had an accident middle of last year.

Driving in the works van doing about 40mph and a transit towing a burger trailer coming in the opposite direction, had a bit of a loose door situation and it flew through the air like a piece of paper.

I curled up as it just hit the pillar with a gun shot BANG, thinking it was going to come through the window.

It was a new van to, only 800 miles on it. :(

Both of us stopped, then he drove off, thinking he was going to turn around, but never came back.

Went and bought a burger off him the following day and called his bluff, saying we spotted a door like the one on the van on X road and he said thank you, he said he did look but couldn't find it when it flew off yesterday.

He gave up his insurance details after. :)

I'm down unit tonight I'm 99% sure I have the condenser ;-)

Had a pheasant fly into the windscreen at 70, was not a pretty sight.

Might be worth putting a claim in with city council.. I did this on my pugeout 207 gthdi.. drove through a pot hole and it damaged my rim and punctured my tyre.. council covered the costs to repair.. :)

Slight difference between a pot hole and a piece of metal !!

there is no difference.Like in any other EU country city council must maintain and clean the public roads, because we pay for these....taxes...etc

Urm yes bit difference when claiming

A claim for a piece of metal that's come from another vehicle at any time will not be payed out not in a million years simple

Pot holes if they have been reported and not fixed within x time then your claim will be paid
