Causes of Clutch wear on DSG

Featured Replies

Hello everyone :)

I need your experience of what causes fast clutch wear of the DSG gearboxes?

i have a 7spd DSG with the 1.4TSI 140PS , is there any tips to maintain those boxes esp. in heave stop and go traffic & hot weather ? as i live in Egypt :)

also i do something i don't know if this is good/correct or bad to the box,

when i am in a heave stop & go traffic when i fully stop i got the lever to N , then when moving again i put lever to D & remove my foot from brakes & when car moves by itself D1 then D2 i start applying throttle gently , i found this is the smoothest way to launch in heavy traffic ,can this method cause any over-stress or clutch wear on the box?should i apply throttle immediately for example when i put the stick to D ?

What you're doing is fine in my opinion. I believe holding the car on the brake while in gear (as is recommended by many) is more likely to wear the clutches prematurely.

I think that in the 7 speed DSG when you are sat in D with your foot on the brake the clutches are open and not rubbing?

The 6 speed box always has the clutch slipping in D when stopped.

The way you are setting off is the smoothest and best for the clutches I think. It allows them time to close fully before using the throttle and limiting any slip.

No idea but our Touran's clutch is worn at 18k and the gearbox judders like hell.

Has done since we purchased it with 9k on the clock

Take it back!!!

I have the 6 speed however had the 7speed in a fabia, it seems to me when your at a complete stop the clutch is engaged so causing no wear or slipping so what you are doing is ok but also leaving it as normal should be okay

It's having a new box next week under warranty ;)

I was told it's normal to get the judder both here and else where, so didn't think too much of it until the garage said it's an issue.

Which box is it? 6 or 7 speed?

Another DSG question:

There's a (security?) waiting in the system when I'm putting the gearbox from R to D after reversing.

The car doesn't start instantly (only after 1-2 sec) even I press the accelerator paddle.

I discovered this method: at the end of reversing whilst I'm just breaking and the car rolls only at reeeally slow speed (1-2 kph) I can already put the gearbox to D.

No weird noises and easy to put to D.

With this method I can skip this disturbing "pause".

Is this bad for the DSG, or no problem?

This usually means you do not apply the brake at the end of reversing.

I think the delay between R and engaging 1st is because they use the same clutch/gear set.

So when changing from R to 1st you have the delay while the clutch disengages, selects the new gear & re-engages.

The VAG DSGs are usually setup with 1,3,5,7, R on one clutch and 2, 4, 6 on the other cluch.

When driving normally there is no delay because as clutch 1 is opening, clutch 2 is already engaged in the next gear & closes at the same time.

OK, it's logical.

It's approx. the same delay when I try to accelerate with hard push on the pedal and the DSG switches back from 4 to 2 for example.

The question is is it bad for the DSG if I use this "trick" after reversing...?

Yeah, its exactly the same as you feel from 4 to 2.

Shouldn't be bad for the gearbox, its just normal operation.

On the DSG the link between the shifter & the gearbox is through software (not mechanically) controlled so should provide protection against anything you do with the lever.

Aki78, pull the DSG level back into Sport mode, flick it over into semi-auto and it'll only kick down the 1 gear at a time, with all the mid range torque you've got, you'll be fine.
