10 meg broadband

Featured Replies

And another bit of gloomy news to add to the above. The NTL Broadband Plus upgrade now button doesn't work. Am I surprised? :(

Just hold back a bit. It will be universal within 6 months

More good news. According to NTL 3Gb a month is sufficient to surf the Internet for 12 hours a day. So with the new 75Gb limit I am going to be able to surf for 300 hours a day. :rubchin:

well we are still behind, south korea have 100meg!

Problem is that I don't have broadband to surf the web exclusively, I also use email, newsgroups and VPN to work, as well as backing up my servers (looking at 3GByte minimum, and that's zipped) on a daily basis.

I never understood the download limit, as the big cost for NTL (and other cable-based systems) is the upload speed, as the network is tailored towards big download capacity and limited upload capacity.

My biggest concern is that P2P will increase again to the point where a lot of the NTL network gets overused, in turn causing the major grief they had when they rolled out the 1Mbit speed upgrades initially. Let's hope they're prepared this time...

Just thought as this thread has been active again I would let you all know that I have been on NTL's 10 Meg Broadband service for the past week. Anyone with a 1 meg or 2 meg connection currently can go to ntls website and change their speed to 10 meg. Ofcourse you have to upgrade to the

They are stalling because they dont currently report on download amounts, until they can tell who is over using the service 10 meg cant be provided to everyone. NTL has never pulled anyone up about the cap, so the 75 gb thing means nothing at the moment, once they begin to offer the other services you'll have to watch your limits but until then downoad what you want.

It's also the UPLOAD speed I'm interested in. That's seems to have been fogotten by provider, who only seem interested in outdoing each other on the DOWNLOAD speed issue. I'm not sure if the problem lies with BT, or with individual ISPs. Certainly, as far as I'm concerned with a 2mb download connection with Plusnet, I would like to see the upload speed rise from the current 256k speed.

Steve

My download today is around 5Mb and upload around 500Kb - that's on NTL's 3Mb Broadband.

saw the gadget show report from south Korea last week. They already have 100Mb standard connection speed over there!

thanks to a rubbish BT exchange we ca only get 2mb at the moment. i want 8mb from bulldog!!

The biggest problem with NTL's 10mb offering is most early cablemodems including ours are not capable of that speed. Our modem only has a 10mb ethernet port, 10mb would max that out resulting in a local network overload.
I have one of the early ntl:home 100 modems and am currently getting 5.67Mbps and 463Kbps download/upload speeds. I see that NTL charge

Im with btopenworld... on 2mb (upgraded from 512)

they have no download limits.. BUT, there are roumours that they do throttle P2P apps during peak time.

meanwhile... my work have just got 20mb fibre broadband and ive got a PC with a large hdd sat in the DMZ :D

I can only get 1mb at home. WHich, is strange because I'm nearer the exchange "as the crow flies" than the office which, is on the same exchange but has 2mb.

SOon to be dropping back to 56k though (no point getting into another 12 month package when I cant take it to NZ)

Unfortunately they can't run underground cables 'as the crow flies'

II see that NTL charge
turn your modem off, call NTL and say it won't power on. They'll have to send you a new one!
But will it be a faster (higher spec) model or the same as the original?

I'd imagine it would be a new one, doubt the have any of the old surfboards left. Could be wrong, worth a try.

SB4100 is fine, it's the older ones that can't do it

Mine is Model No: 60194E-A12 - described also as ntl:home 100. No mention of manufacturer.

I had my SB4100 when I first got my NTL, is it the SB4000 thats 10meg then? thinking of it my SB4100 does have a 10/100 connection but my wireless router only has a 10meg wlan port
